ANNUAL REPORT
OF THE
SCHOOL COMMITTEE
OF THE
TOWN OF DUXBURY,
For the School Year 1877-8.
1
REPORT.
TO THE CITIZENS OF THE TOWN OF DUXBURY :
The School Committee for the year 1877-8 would respectfully present to you their annual report, as follows :-
The educational interests of the Town continue to be in a generally satisfactory condition. There has existed during the year uninterrupted harmony between the teachers and the pupils, and, with one exception, no in- terruption of school sessions have occurred, or change of teachers taken place, except in cases of sickness. Only one occurrence took place during the year which seemed to be of a serious nature, and which caused your Com- mittee and others to entertain fears as to its results, but it finally was disposed of in a manner satisfactory to all the parties concerned.
In regard to the condition of the schools in the Town, your Committee can only repeat what was said in their report of last year - that several things have contribu-
76
ted to the satisfactory condition of the schools, among which may be mentioned
COMFORTABLE SCHOOL HOUSES.
By a commendable liberality manifested for several years past, several new school-houses have been built, and others repaired and remodelled, so that all of the school-houses, with one exception, are in good order, and are comfortably furnished for teachers and scholars. During the year three of the schools have been partially furnished with maps. All of the schools are now fur- nished with these necessary aids to the study of geog- raphy, which, although not complete, are as full as your Committee felt warranted to procure during the year.
Your Committee would desire to note with special emphasis and commendation the growing
INTEREST OF PARENTS IN THE SCHOOLS.
It is believed that no one thing has tende:l more to promote the success of the educational interests of the Town than the friendly interest manifested by the par- ents and guardians of the pupils. In many instances the visitors have been so numerous during the examinations that all the available room in the school-house has been fully occupied. The deep interest manifested by the visitors on these occasions, as well as their words of com- mendation to teachers and scholars, have been of the most encouraging and salutary character.
77
THE TEACHERS.
It is due to the corps of teachers who have been employed during the year, to say that, whatever the degree of success attained by individual teachers, all gave evidence of deep interest in the work of the school-room, and pains-taking effort in behalf of their scholars. It is also due to all to place on record the fact, that at the examinations at the close of the year the scholars in all of the districts gave pleasing evidence of general excel- lence in study and deportment.
THE SCHOOLS IN DETAIL.
DISTRICT No. 1 .- The Intermediate department was under the care of Miss Emily W. Sears. The scholars in this department being largely composed of those who would naturally attend a Grammar school, if there was one in Town, are generally well advanced in their studies, and are preparing for admission to the Academy. Miss Sears is one of our most popular and accomplished teachers, and continues to secure the affection of her pupils, and the confidence and esteem of their parents.
The Primary department was under the care of Miss Marion J. Perry during the first and second terms. Miss Perry having been transferred to No. 3, Miss Lizzie A. Randall took charge during the third term, and suc- ceeded well in her first effort as a teacher. She closed her school very creditably, and with the approbation of all concerned.
78
Whole number of scholars :- Primary department, 23 ; average attendance, 20. Intermediate department, 30 ; average attendance, 27. Number of scholars over fifteen years of age, 3.
DISTRICT No. 2 was under the charge of Miss Amanda P. Ventress during the first and second terms, and also for a few weeks of the third term. A severe illness com- pelled Miss Ventress to relinquish her school in January last, much to the regret of her many friends in the dis. trict. Mrs. Jennie A. Standish took charge of the school during the remainder of the term, and brought the year's · work of the school to a close with the unqualified appro- bation of all concerned.
Whole number of scholars, 44; average attendance, 37 Number over fifteen years of age, 6.
DISTRICT No. 3 .- During the first and second terms this school was under the charge of Miss Georgie M. Pickernell. As she declined to continue another term, Miss Marion JJ. Perry was appointed to supply the vacancy, and she finished the school year with credit to herself, and with the approbation of the district.
Whole number of scholars, 33 ; average attendance, 30.
DISTRICT No. 4 .- This school was in charge of Mrs. Ida M. Chandler during the year. The examination at the close of the third term testified to the efficiency and industry of the teacher, as well as the faithfulness and hard work of the scholars. This is one of the districts
79
noted for the interest manifested by the parents in the welfare of the school.
Whole number of scholars, 18 ; average attendance, 16. Scholars over fifteen years of age, 2.
DISTRICT NO. 5 .- Miss Mary E. Chandler had charge of this school during the entire year. It is due to the teacher, as well as to the scholars, to state in this report that the school showed a very marked improvement, both in deportment and attainments. A large attend- ance of the parents and friends at the closing exercise of the last term was a pleasing feature in the history and prospects of the school.
Whole number of scholars, 21; average attendance, 17.
DISTRICT No, 6 was in charge of Miss Mary D. Boyls- ton during the year. This school maintains its deserv- edly high reputation for good order and efficiency. Quite a number of young men attend this school during the winter season, and their industry in study, and gen- tlemanly conduct in the school-room are worthy of all praise. Miss Boylston is to be congratulated on her con- tinued success in the district. 1
Whole number of scholars, 32 ; average attendance, 27. Number of scholars under five years of age, 2; number of scholars over fifteen years of age, 3.
DISTRICT No. 7 .- This school was in charge of Miss Sarah C. Goodspeed during the year. The absence of so many scholars, who are at work during a certain portion
80
of the fall term, detracts from the otherwise good appearance of the school. This, together with consider- able sickness among the scholars, interfered considerably with the work of the school-room. Considering all the circumstances, however, the examination at the closing of the third term was very creditable, both to the teacher and the pupils.
Whole number of scholars, 39 ; average attendance, 32. Number of scholars over fifteen years of age, 1.
DISTRICT NO. 8 .- This school was under the care of Mrs. Mary R. Crocker, a member of the School Commit- tec, during the year, and as usual maintained its deserv- edly high reputation for general efficiency. A movement is on foot in the district which aims to secure some action by which the wants of the district, so far as school accommodation is concerned, may be more fully met.
Whole number of scholars, 43; average attendance, 39. Number of scholars under five years of age, 1.
DISTRICT No. 9 .- This school, which is the smallest in the town, was under the care of Miss Elizabeth B. Baker during the year. No school in the town appeared to better advantage than this one at the close of the year. Considering the age of the scholars their pro- ficiency was very marked, and was alike creditable to themselves and their teacher.
Whole number of scholars, 9 ; average attendance, 8.
81
THE PARTRIDGE ACADEMY.
As the Partridge Academy is recognized as the High school of the Town, it seems proper to refer to it in this report. The School Committee, as such, have no official relations with, or control over, the Academy, but in all those arrangements by which the pupils of the public schools are admitted, when qualified, to the Academy as the High school of the Town, the recommendations of the School Committee are fully recognized, and the Trus- tees of the Academy seek to further the wishes of the Town as expressed in the arrangement entered into some years ago.
The Academy is evidently in a prosperous condition under the united care of Prof. E B. Maglathlin, as prin- cipal, and Miss Emmn S. Stetson, as assistant. The former is an enthusiast in his profession, and the latter is a most accomplished and experienced teacher. Mr. Maglathlin is both earnest and thorough in his work, and it is confidently hoped that the Academy may con- tinue to prosper under his administration. The last examination was one of peculiar interest, not only because of the general efficiency and deportment of the pupils, but because of the presence and kind words of the venerable President of the Board of Trustees, the Rev. Josiah Moore. He spoke feelingly of his many years' connection with the institution, and his abiding interest in its prosperity. His reference to his own fee- bleness and advanced age was solemn and impressive,
82
and his words of kindly counsel were listened to with deepest attention.
The following abstract from the reports of the Acad- emy have been kindly furnished by the Principal :
Average number of pupils :- boys, 25 ; girls, 20. Total, 45.
Average attendance :- boys, 95 per cent .; girls, 97 per cent. Total, 96 per cent.
Average scholarship :- boys, 85 per cent .; girls, 93 per cent. Total, 89 per cent.
Average deportment :- boys, 90 per cent .; girls, 95 per cent.
According to the above abstract it will be seen that the general average is four per cent higher, and the average attendance is nearly six per cent. higher, than for several years past. According to the records, the gene- ral average of attendance at the Academy has never been as high as during the past year.
ADDITIONAL ITEMS.
Number of persons in town on May 1, 1877, between the ages of five and fifteen, 376.
Whole number of scholars enrolled in the different schools during the year, 349.
Average attendance during the year, 293.
There has been a decrease of four names on the school registers as compared with last year.
For the year 1874-5 the average attendance showed a loss of schooling equal to sixty-one scholars. For 1875-6 the loss was equal to fifty-nine scholars.
83
For 1876-7 the loss was equal to fifty scholars. This year the loss has been equal to fifty-six scholars.
Number attending school under five years of age, 5 ; number over fifteen, 47.
All of which is respectfully submitted,
W. W. LYLE, School E. H. CHANDLER, Committee MARY R. CROCKER, I of Duxbury.
