ANNUAL REPORT
-OF THE
TOWN OFFICERS
OF THE-
TOWN OF DUXBURY
-FOR THE-
YEAR ENDING MARCH 15TH,
1883.
Calendar Mar 1882
Annual Town Meeting April 2nd.
PLYMOUTH : AVERY & DOTEN, BOOK AND JOB PRINTERS. 1883.
REPORT.
The following report of the receipts and expenditures of the Town of Duxbury for the year ending March 15, 1883, is respectfully submitted :
Your Selectmen would state, in justice to the Treasurer, that the reason his account of uncollected taxes is so much in excess of last year, is owing to the delay of some heavy tax payers in paying their taxes before closing our accounts with him. Your Assessors have, in several cases, remitted taxes where there was no probability of collecting without distress to the parties, rather than show them, from year to year, as resources of the Town. Your Selectmen beg leave to state that, although the Town at its last annual meeting voted that licenses for the sale of intoxicating liquors might be granted by the Selectmen, yet under that vote no person during the year has made an application for the same.
When the Town voted to rebuild Blue River Bridge, they made no appropriation, but voted that the Selectmen and Treasurer should hire the money of the railroad fund deposited in the New England Trust Company. This fund has been used for that purpose; and as the Town at a former meeting voted it should be deposited, to be used at some future day to reduce the railroad loan, by that vote it must be replaced. It is for the voters, at the annual meeting, to decide to either raise the sum by taxation or reconsider the former vote,
4
Your Board of Overseers of the Poor were obliged this year to purchase a new furnace for the Almshouse, and also to make some general repairs, needed in and around the build- ings. As there was no appropriation made for such purpose, it was charged to incidental account. The labor, with the exception of masonry, has been done by the inmates.
Mr. Simmons and wife, who have had charge of the Alms- house since the 20th of April, have certainly met our expectations. They have been kind to the inmates, and have done all they could to make them comfortable, and we cheer- fully recommend them to our successors in office. As an offset to the bill for team, for trucking and carting, the Town has on hand a large quantity of dressing for the farm, which is very much needed, and not included in articles remaining on the farm. The cash from sales from farm paid into the Treasurer would have been of greater amount, but for the amount received from produce and paid out for articles used in the house, amounting to twenty dollars, by the Superintendent.
.
