instances is not what it should be. The Committee have been obliged, during the past year, to inform parents that their children were not attending the number of weeks required by law. The parent who allows his child to attend school irregularly is guilty of a very grave neglect of duty ; for, besides causing the child a life-long injury, he has wronged society, for the future welfare of our country depends upon the education of those who are to become her citizens.
Early in the Spring term, Mr. George H. Martin, Agent of the State Board of Education, visited our schools, making examinations in the various branches taught, and afterwards, at a meeting of the Committee and teachers of the Town, made such criticisms as he judged necessary.
During recent years, much has been said and written of the so-called "new education," which is variously defined, but it is, in reality. another education "which is not another." With the great progress made in the various pursuits of life, reforms in matters pertaining to education have been made, and we have today better school-houses and furnishings; better text books; and educators who have truer ideas of the ends to be sought and better methods to obtain those ends. Not that per- fection has been reached in our system of common schools, by any means, but it is claimed that the schools are improved and the results better, in spite of asser- tions to the contrary made by many persons, some of whom have become eminent in some other profession
47
than that of the educator. It should be the effort of our teachers to keep abreast of the times, and by study and observation to improve constantly.
TEXT BOOKS.
In accordance with the statute, the Committee have furnished the pupils in the different schools, including the Partridge Academy, with the necessary books and supplies. Your Committee have spent, during the financial year 1885-6, the sum of $335.21. There are some books and supplies on hand, and it is believed that the expense for the coming year will be considerably less, as there are now so many books belonging to the Town in the various schools. Your Committee find the books generally in good condition, and also notice that stationery has been used more economically than last year.
SCHOOL-HOUSES.
The Committee have had the school-houses in Districts Nos. 3 and 7 painted by contract. There are others which need painting and one which needs to be shingled. The buildings are generally in excellent condition and are a credit to the Town. Mr. George H. Martin, of whose visit mention has already been made, compli- mented the condition of our school buildings, and also said that he found the schools unusually well supplied with maps, globes, etc.

THE PARTRIDGE ACADEMY.
The next examination for the admission of High School scholars will take place at the Academy, Monday, June 28th, 1886, at nine o'clock, A. M. The school year will commence August 30th, 1886, continuing forty weeks, with three recesses of one week each. £
The requirements for admission are the same as last year. The candidates must be twelve years of age, and pass a satisfactory examination in reading, writing, arithmetic (common and decimal fractions), the geography of the United States and North America, and English grammar, including the parsing and analysis of easy prose sen- tences. It is to be wished that more of the pupils in the districts which are farther distant from the Academy. availed themselves of the privileges of this excellent school. Of course, the distance is considerable, but we have in mind those who, in former years, have attended at considerable exertion. At the last examination, the following questions were used :
ARITHMETIC.
1. Find the G. C. D. and L. C. M. of 288 and 480.
