In October last, Mrs. Jane S. Weston was given up by her sons to the Overseers to take charge of, in their judgment at the time, her income from pension and State aid, should be sufficient for her support, and made efforts to have her boarded in some private family ; but, on inquiry, could find but one, Mrs. Oliver Sampson of Kingston, that would receive her, and that only at four dollars per week. She was boarded there one month. Mrs. Sampson at that time sent word to the Overseers that she declined to board her longer at any price. As nothing better could be done, she was taken to the almshouse. The following is the account of the Overseers of the Poor with her, and her income :

Report of School Committee.
The School Committee of Duxbury respectfully submit the following report for the year 1886-7 :
Our district schools have been in session thirty-eight weeks during the past year, and the regular work of the schools has proceeded with very little interruption. With two exceptions, no changes of teachers have been made. At the commencement of the Fall term, Miss Evalena Freeman, who declined to teach any longer in the Island Creek School, was placed in charge of the Ashdod School, and Miss Harriet W. Goodwin was transferred from the Ashdod School to the Island Creek. Your Committee consider that the past year has been a profitable one, and that much good work has been accomplished.
In accordance with the statute, instruction in physi- ology and hygiene with reference "to the effects of alcoholic drinks, stimulants and narcotics on the human system," has been given in our schools. Some physio- logical charts are needed for the better teaching of this subject, and the Committee hope that these may be furnished next year.
4
/
50
During the past year the Committee have expended the sum of $320.89 for text books and supplies, including what has been furnished for the High School pupils in the Academy.
In the repair of school-houses, your Committee have endeavored to be as economical as possible.
THE PARTRIDGE ACADEMY.
Your Committee have, for some time, been of the opinion that some change was desirable in the course of study for the High School pupils in the Academy. Many plans were suggested, and, finally, at a joint meeting of the Trustees and the School Committtee, July 12, 1886, it was voted to have the course of study cover a period of four years instead of three as hereto- fore, and a Committee, consisting of the Rev. Mr. Knapp of the Board of Trustees, M. C. F. Jacobs, the Principal of the Academy, and one member of the School Com- mittee, was chosen to prepare a course of study. Owing to the fact that all our district schools are un- graded, it has not been considered practicable to require the same amount of work from High School pupils before entering the Academy, that is required for admission to High Schools in towns where the schools are graded. Therefore, the pupils have spent the first year of their course at the Academy, in completing purely grammar school work. Now that the course is lengthened one year, three years can be given to High School work, and the work can not only be arranged much better, but can be done more thoroughly. Owing
51.
to this change there will be no class to graduate this year.
At the last graduating exercises at the Academy, the resignation of Miss Emma S. Stetson was made public. For eleven successive years Miss Stetson had fulfilled the duties of assistant in a manner to win the respect and esteem of all, and her resignation caused sincere regret.
Miss Stella C. Jacobs was chosen by the Trustees to fill the position made vacant by Miss Stetson's resignation.
The next examination of High School applicants will take place at the Academy, Monday, June 27, 1887, at 9 A. M., the requisites for admission being the same as heretofore.
In concluding this reference to the Academy, the Committee wish to acknowledge the courtesy with which the Trustees have always complied with the recom- mendations of the Committee, and the Committee also wish to express their entire satisfaction with the school under the present teachers.
In conclusion, the Committee would urge the parents, by frequent visits to the schools, and by all the means in their power, to help the teachers in their great work. For it is when parents, teachers and Committee work together, that the best work is done.
