ANNUAL REPORT 9
-
-OF THE-
TOWN OFFICERS
- OF THE -
TOWN OF DUXBURY
-FOR THE-
YEAR ENDING MARCH 15th,
1888.
Calendar year 1887
PLYMOUTH : AVERY & DOTEN, BOOK AND JOB PRINTERS. 1888.
1
REPORT OF THE SELECTMEN.
The Selectmen of the Town of Duxbury, respectfully submit the following report, showing the receipts and expenditures of the Town from March 15th, 1887, to March 15th, 1888, and its financial condition at the last named date ; added to which are the reports of the Assessors, Overseers of the Poor, Town Clerk, School Committee, and the Board of Health.
As Road Commissioners, the Selectmen cannot report as much improvement on the old method, perhaps, as was hoped for, and in some cases expected. Still we think that there is a good showing for the money expended, and the highways in general in better condition than usual at this time of the year, and with one exception feel satisfied with the result. The exception referred to is, that we have been obliged, through a number of causes, to exceed the appropriation to quite an amount.
We have been called upon, and considering it for the best interests of the Town, financially as well as otherwise, have made special repairs in a number of cases, of which we will mention, bridges on Harrison and Surplus Streets, and at Island Creek. Also repairs on Point, Cove Street, Island Creek and Town Hall, roads.
Our duties as Assessors have prevented us in many cases from giving repairs our personal supervision, and would recom- mend that the repairs of highways be placed in the charge of
4
a person or persons who can and will make it a specialty, and thus have the work done at the right season, and in a proper manner.
In regard to the appropriation for suppressing the illegal sale of intoxicating liquors, there has been no expenditure. Have received no complaints in regard to the hotels in Town the past year, but have had a number in regard to one or two places in the upper portion of the Town, but as the rumsellers' ways are so devious, have not, up to this time, been able to gain evi- dence sufficient to warrant an arrest; but consider it to be merely a question of time, as by a liberal outlay of funds the parties can be convicted, and the places closed.
The following is a statement in detail of the expenses of the different departments the past year :
