Report of Selectmen

To the Citizens of Duxbury :

Your board makes the following report for the year ending December 31st, 1940.

As each department under the jurisdiction of the Select- men make their annual report of their doings each year it seems unnecessary for the Selectmen to make a lengthy report covering the same.

We have according to the vote of the last annual meet- ing laid out Soule Ave. and the street leading from Cove Street to Powder Point Ave. This will be for the consid- eration for acceptance of the voters at the 1941 Town Meeting.

The sidewalk from Harrison Street to the property of Daniel L. Winsor has been built with a cement curb and surfaced with a material that should make it permanent.

There has also been constructed a sidewalk on Powder Poin Ave., in the dangerous location from Cove St. to property of Mr. Garfield.

Gurnet Bridge having been in the custody of the County Commissioners for many years has been turned over to the Town of Duxbury as of January 1st, 1941.

There being some material and many tools which the Town can buy at a very low figure we are asking the town to appropriate a sum for the purchase of same as we will need them for future repairs of the bridge.

There is a bill presented to the Legislature for a per- manent sea wall to be built from Webster Island so-called

-9-

to the Hummock at an approximate cost of $30,000 at which the Town will be asked to furnish $7,500.

At this point on Duxbury Beach there is quite a substan- tial settlement and it would seem a reasonable request on the part of the property owners.

Owing to the present outlook at home and abroad we feel that the voters should consider twice before voting large appropriations this year.

However your Selectmen acting as your Finance Com- mittee will recommend to the town only such amounts as will not allow our departmental wants or needs suffer and to assure you a tax-rate practically the same as the last four years.

SIDNEY C. SOULE, HARRY F. SWIFT, CHARLES R. CROCKER,

Selectmen of Duxbury.
