JOHN CORNELL ART GALLERY REPORT OF CUSTODIAN

To the Trustees of the Memorial Hall Library :

GENTLEMEN :- During the past year the Cornell Art Gallery has been visited by 2227 persons. Of this number, 1099 were adults, and 1128 were children. There has been a gratifying increase the past three years. The attendance in 1910 was 1216; of this number 604 were adults and 612 were children.

It is pleasant to see the number of adults steadily increasing, especially when one remembers that this is the twelfth year of the gallery's existence.

Respectfully submitted, ABBIE S. DAVIS

To the Citizens of the Town of Andover :

Your Board of Public Works submit their thirteenth annual report, embracing the twenty-third of the Water System, and the fifteenth of the Sewer, for the year ending January 9, 1912.

WATER SYSTEM

There have been added during the past year 18649.1 feet of extention to the water main. This included for the most part the extensions recommended by the Board at the last town meeting. The location and details may be seen in the Superin- tendent's report. The total length of water mains is 44.34 miles, and the total number of hydrants is 321. Total services now in use are 1,245, of which number 1,023 are metered. The receipts from water rates are $18,515.99, a gain of $902.33 over last year.

The expense of maintenance is divided as follows:

Office expenses, 1300 00

Care of teams, meters, and general repairs, 3338 86

$8223 48

$8200 00

5

Gallons of water pumped, 203,401,37I.

Cost per million gallons on cost of pumping, $17.62, which was $18.50 in 1910.

Receipts per million gallons, $91.03, which in 1910 was $76.93.

An appropriation of $8200.00 is asked for the expense of maintenance for 1912, to be divided as follows : Salaries $3000.00; labor, $2000.00; fuel, $1200.00; supplies, $1000.00; teams, $500.00 ; extra expense, $500.00.

The bonded debt of the Water System is now $194,000.00, of which amount $50,000.00 is redeemable by sinking funds which now amount to $24491.30. The balance of the bonded debt is paid by annual appropriations by the town. An appro- priation of $750.00 is asked for the sinking funds account.

The High Pressure Service System has continued to give excellent service, and we believe has materially increased the water rates.

Mr. Frank L. Cole, who was appointed Acting Superintendent, has been elected Superintendent to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr. John E. Smith.

The Water System appears to be in excellent condition, and no repairs or changes of consequence are contemplated.

The land of the Boston Ice Company at Haggett's Pond is in the market, and the Board deems it wise for the town to control this property, and recommends its purchase.

SEWER DEPARTMENT

No Sewer mains have been laid during the year. Twenty- eight applications for connections have been received, and all have been accepted. Number of feet of connections laid is 2,051. Total connections is 35,553 feet, total number connections, 589.
