REPORT OF CUSTODIAN JOHN CORNELL ART GALLERY
To the Trustees of the Memorial Hall Library :
GENTLEMEN :- The attendance during 1913 was much smaller than that of 1912, only 884 persons visiting the gallery. Of this number 201 were adults and 683 children. The decrease in visitors was partly due to the closing of the gallery for several weeks in the summer. During this period much was done to improve the appearance of the gallery. The walls and pictures were cleaned, the majority of the latter being taken down. Seven were not replaced, being transferred to the branch library at Ballardvale, where they are most welcome. The laying of a cork carpet was another improvement. Six pictures were also purchased. These were obtained through the Goldsmith-Clark Co., who also attended to the framing and hanging, besides rehanging the old pictures. Much thought was given to the selection of the mouldings for the new pictures and skilled work- manship is shown in their finish, and in the framing.
The present arrangement of the pictures is most effective and satisfactory.
The new pictures are : Velasquez's " The Surrender of Breda ;" Rousseau's "Edge of the Forest of Fountainebleau; " Josef Israël's " Interior of a Cottage ; " George Inness' "The Coming Storm ; " Winslow Homer's "The Fog Warning," and Interior of La Sainte Chapelle. The first two are from Braun & Clement, the next three from the Elson Co., the last from the Turner Co.
All are beautiful reproductions, and are generally admired. The American prints are indeed most desirable, being lower in price and satisfactory in every respect.
While we should be glad to see the foreign schools still more represented, it is earnestly hoped that eventually more of the work of our American painters will be added to the collection.
Respectfully submitted,
ABBIE S. DAVIS, Custodian
