6

ANNUAL REPORT.

Report of Selectmen.

Jan. 9th, 1906.

The Town has made some improvements the past year. We have built a new school-house to replace the one lost by fire, our guide boards have been newly painted, our streets have been named, and a telephone service has been established. All of which adds to our town and helps to give it a more prosperous appearance, and makes it seem a more desirable place in which to live. An appropriation from the state to improve our highway, would be greatly appreciated, and it is hoped that the State Highway Com- mission can be prevailed upon to allow us a portion of road money in the near future.

Our Oysters were sold last year to Bradford Marble of Somerset, Mass., for $450, and there are reasons to be- lieve that a favorable market will be found for them this year.

There is not much to be said in regard to our Town Farm. It was rented to Mr. Brightman for $100, he to feed and lodge tramps at 30 cents each and to care for any cases the overseers of the poor may send there at a price that in their judgment would be fair. There has not been any inmates at the farm during the year, except tramps, and only 15 of those. Partial support has been rendered to the amount of $708.16.

Nothing has been done in the way of settling ourclaim against the N. Y., N. H. & H. R. R. Co., more than to bring suit against them. our counsel advises us that same has

7

ANNUAL REPORT.

been listed and will probably come before the courts some time this year. It is the consensus of opinion that the town will fare better to leave the adjustment of this claim to a jury rather than to settle it out of court. It has been intimated that the railroad company will give us more than their original offer which was $1000.

There is some question in regard to the legality of paying our school committee any salary, under the present laws, without a vote of the Town to do so. While the services of the superintendent without doubt, relieve the school committee of a large portion of the work, we be- lieve that as long as it is necessary to have a school com- mittee they should be paid for their services. This is a matter that should be acted on at our annual meeting.

The population as shown by the census taken last spring is 920, which is 25 less than when taken before.

There has been only one case of contagious disease re- ported to the board of health, during the year.

The following statement of our financial condition as compared with the year before shows a difference of $2158.51. Our new school at Myricks which cost $2232.34 will offset this difference and gives us a small balance in favor of this year.
