ANNUAL REPORT.

Report of Selectmen.

TO THE CITIZEN OF THE TOWN OF BERKLEY :

January 24th, 1907.

In submitting our annual report we are pleased to say that our claims against the N. Y., N. H. & H. R. R. Co., for the destruction of our School house has been settled, the Court having fixed the amount of damage at $2500.00. After pay- ing all the expenses on this case there is enough left to more than cover the cost of our new building. A satisfactory end- ing of what was a serious matter.

The efforts of your Board to obtain an appropriation for permanent improvement of our highways has been realized : the State Highway Commission having awarded us $5700.00, a part of which has already been spent. As we are compelled to spend this money on a certain piece of road it is not such a direct benefit to the town as it might have been. This sec- tion of road is between Taunton and Lakeville and is a part of the main line running from Taunton to New Bedford.

If the town would raise and appropriate a sum of money to be spent for permanent improvement of our highways we would get more help from the state.

The cutting of bushes alongside of our highways in some districts has been very satisfactory, while in others it has not, for that reason we would recommend that the town pass a vote instructing the surveyors to cut the bushes in their dis- tricts within a specified time, the cost of which shall be paid from their portion of road money.

6

ANNUAL REPORT.

We let Bradford E. Marble, of Somerset, have our oysters on these conditions that he was to catch and market them and allow the town one half of the net profit, he to guarantee our share to be not less than $225.00. He to furnish the boats, baskets and rakes and make no charge except that which was actually paid out for catching.

We have Mr. Marble's statement showing that the total amount of oysters taken from our beds was 1897 bushels, which he sold to John T. Smith of Warren, R. I., for $948.50, and that he paid out for catching $562.05, he also states that the incidental expenses were not less than $50.00.

We also have a certified statement from John T. Smith, stating that he bought our oysters from Mr. Marble, 1897 bushels paying 50 cts. per bushel.

Our Town Farm was rented to Mr. Brightman for $100.00 the terms and conditions of the contract being the same as it has always been. He has fed and lodged twenty tramps, but has not had any inmates at the farm during the year. As Overseers of the Poor, we feel that the town has been very fortunate in this respect for we have not had a case of full support in several years.

While we have realized more from the farm since we began to let it, it is the opinion of your Board that the farm is not in as good condition as when it was run by the town, therefore it is a question, considering the depreciation just how well we are doing.

Owing to the fact that the Firemen of Taunton have been called upon several times in the past few years to render aid to our Town in cases of fire, and in appreciation of the way in which they have responded and for the assistance which they have given us, we believe the Town should raise and appro- priate a sum of money for their Relief Association, and we hope that this matter will be acted upon at our annual meeting.

7

ANNUAL REPORT.

Only three cases of contagious disease were reported to the Board of Health during the year.

When the personal property at the Town Farm was sold, the proceeds of that sale about $727.00 was placed on deposit in the Five Cent Savings Bank at Fall River, by a vote of the town it has since been used towards paying for our new school house.

As our financial condition now is such that the town is able to replace that money in the bank, we would recommend either that, or some disposition of a like nature, be made of a portion of the funds now on hand.

The following statement shows that the financial condi- tion of the town is much better than the year before.
