Report of the School Committee
The Roby school building which was in process of erection at the time of our last annual report was completed and occupied at the commencement of the spring term.
Since the close of the fiscal year, 1897, it has been inspected by the State Inspector, and with one or two trivial changes made, will fully conform to the State requirements as to the heating and ventilation.
Although our school accommodations have been largely in- creased during the past three years, and the outlay for that purpose has been heavy, yet the increase in the number of pupils has been so rapid that at the present time our schools have not sufficient accommodations.
This is particularly so in Cliftondale where the seven schools average fifty pupils to each room. It will be necessary to open at least two new schools in this Ward at the commencement of the next fall term.
To do so, more accommodations will have to be provided, either by building a new building or hiring rooms. It must be remembered, however, that the use of rooms which do not meet the State requirements can only be temporary, and we believe it will be for the best interest of the Town to at once commence the erection of a new building.
While the schools in Cliftondale are urgently in need of imme- diate relief, it will be but a short time before further accommoda- tions must be provided at East Saugus and Saugus Centre, if the Town is to continue to grow as rapidly as during the past year, and with improvement in business conditions, we see no reason why it should not do so. By referring to the Superintendent's Report, it will be seen that in the fall term we had 138 more pupils in our schools than at the same time the previous year, and

while this can be partially accounted for by the large number in the High School, yet it mostly comes from new pupils.
The High School has grown rapidly during the past two years, and as the number to be admitted each year increases it must continue to do so. It is, however, partially accounted for by the introduction of the four years' course which has made our gradu- ating classes small the past two years.
The rooms provided for this school in the Roby school building only furnish sufficient accommodations for its present membership and, as the class to enter in the fall term will be a large one, we believe it will be found necessary for it to use the entire second story of the building. If so we shall have to again occupy the old Town Hall building, in which case it will need to be refitted.
In our report of last year we recommended the closing of the school at Oaklandvale and the transportation of the pupils to the schools in Ward Two. In order to ascertain the sentiments of the people of that Ward regarding such a change, a hearing was given åt which there appeared to be such a decided opposition to the plan, that the school has been continued.
The large increase in the number of pupils not only calls for larger expenditures for accommodations, but also for books, supplies, fuel, etc. During the past year our expenditures on these items has increased some $900.
We estimate the expenses for the coming fiscal year, as follows :
Teachers' salaries
$12,500 00
Janitors' salaries
1,600 00
Fuel .
1,200 00
Books and supplies
1,600 00
Incidentals
100 00
$17,000 00
During the past four years our schools have shown a marked improvement in their work, and we believe we are now reaping the great benefits which come from a careful supervision.
The improvement is perhaps most noticeable in the High School, as the pupils who now enter from the different sections of the town, come now uniformally and better prepared than formerly. Then each teacher had much left to her own discretion, but now

all work along the same line for a definite purpose, and being frequently brought together at teachers' meetings when different subjects and methods are discussed and their work systematically laid out, are enabled to do their work much better and obtain far better results.
