The Overseers of the Poor, in submitting their annual report, regret that in some respects the showing is not as good as they desired ; yet, upon the whole, they feel that their department is in quite a satisfactory condition.

The extreme high price of coal during the first part of the year and the general high prices of supplies used at the home and fur- nished to families, which have prevailed during the year, have been somewhat burdensome.

It will be seen that the sum of $463.14 over the appropriation was drawn, but a new floor had to be laid in the barn, and other repairs, for which no provision was made, caused an outlay of $92.83, and the sum of $581.37 was expended on non-settle- ment persons, a part of which has already and the rest will come into the treasury in due time, With these deductions, the outlay was $210.96 less than the appropriation.

The increase in the personal property, $341.96, was very good ; and, after the $196.19 balance due the superintendent is deducted there remains a credit to the home and farm of $165 .- 77 ; the five inmates for the year also being supported without extra charge.

I2I

OVERSEERS' REPORT.

The six acres of land broken up last year has been put to good account, as quite a large quantity of fodder was grown upon it this year, and in a short time a valuable hay field will be the result.

The fire escape, for which an appropriation was made at the last March meeting, was erected early in the summer, and was pronounced by the inspector as entirely satisfactory and the best for the outlay he knew of.

The home and premises are kept in excellent condition, and the superintendent, Mr. Wiggin, and the matron, Mrs. Wiggin, show no lack of interest in their work, and the town is fortunate in having such capable and trustworty persons in charge.

As the State is to support all insane persons in future, your board in closing recommend an appropriation of $3,500,00.

Respectfully submitted,

JAMES A. HALLIDAY, GEO, H, AMES, HENRY N, OLIVER.
