Of the periodicals received, 18 are subscribed for by the
222
Branch, and 5 are sent each month to the branch from the Main Library, making 23 different magazines for the reading room and for home circulation. These periodicals are listed in Appendix D.
The Branch was open 136 days, with a circulation of 9224 volumes, a daily average of 68 -. The largest number issued on any day was 123 on August 3: and the smallest, 22, on October 10. Cards have been given to 402 new borrowers.
Since the opening of the Branch, the delivery station at H. O. Collyer's store has been discontinued. Books from the Main Lib- rary have been sent through the Branch, weekly, to such borrowers as desired them. The number of books exchanged in this way decreased, as foreseen, until in the fall it became possible to send the books to and from the Main Library by parcel post, thereby saving much of the cost of transportation. This was begun on October 19, and the change has proved satisfactory. The books are returned to Weymouth, on Thursday of each week, other books from the Main Library, in exchange, are mailed to the Branch for delivery on the following Saturday.
The appreciation shown by the people of North Weymouth of their additional library privileges, suggests anew the opportunity for Branch service in East Weymouth.
The Weymouth Historical Society celebrated on August 19, the tercentenary of the first settlers in Weymouth, who lived here for a short time in 1622. This quiet celebration was a forerunner of the more elaborate one which it is hoped will commemorate, in 1923, the tercentenary of the permanent settlement.
In connection with the celebration on August 19, at the sug- gestion of Mrs. Mary Fifield King, an exhibition of material per- taining to the history of Weymouth was held at the library. Mrs. King arranged the treasures of the Fifield Collection in the Read- ing Room, where they could be inspected and appreciated. This collection, which had never before been displayed, includes an in- teresting assortment of early historical papers, anti-slavery do- cuments-among them a set of the famous publication, the "Liber- ty Bell"- and relics of the Tufts and other Weymouth families.
Oil portraits and busts of Mrs. Maria Weston Chapman and her husband, and a fine painting of Joshua Bates, presented to the library a few years ago, by Mrs. Warren Weston and her daughter Mrs. Meigs, and a bust, with pedestal, of Joshua Bates' son, who was killed in England in 1835, a gift from William H. Cowing, were a part of the exhibition.
Charles Francis Adams' scholarly and valuable papers on Weymouth history, together with many books bearing on the same subject: autograph copies of books, presented to the library by the authors,-"Reminiscences" illustrated by photographs by Ed- mund Soper Hunt; "Story of my life," by Mrs. Mary A. Livermore; "Birds in the bush," "Spring notes from Tennessee", "A rambler's lease," by Bradford Torrey,-and a number of Howard M. Dow's beautifully written music scores were also exhibited.
The framed letter of Abigail Adams to her son Thomas Boyl- ston Adams, franked by John Adams, was a center of interest throughout the exhibition. When Mrs. Adams' great-grandson, Charles Francis Adams, presented this letter to the library in 1897, he wrote "The autograph letters of Mrs. Adams, having her full signature. are difficult if not impossible, to obtain."
Visitors from suburban cities and towns were attracted to
223
the exhibit by notices in the daily and weekly newspapers. The exhibition closed on September 16.
The Main Library was open 302 days, with a circulation of 69,825 volumes, which, with the 9,224 volumes circulated from the Branch, made a total circulation of 77,049 volumes. This is 9,308 more than that of last year, and doubtless is due largely to the opening of the North Weymouth Branch. Comment is un- necessary on the other statistics of the year's work, which may be found in Appendix A.
The Reference department received the following additions : Encyclopaedia of religion and ethics, ed. by James Hastings and others, v. 12; Farmer and Henley's Dictionary of slang and collo- quial English; Hyamson's Dictionary of English phrases; Keller's Readers' digest of books; Kroeger's Guide to the study and use of reference books, 3d ed .; Massachusetts, Manual of the General Court, 1922; New international year book for 1921; Readers' guide to periodical literature, v.5,1919-1921; United States catalog supplement, July 1921-June 1922; Webster's new inter- national dictionary, 1922. (1913); Who's who, 1922; Who's who in America, 1922-1923; World Almanac and encyclopedia, 1922; World book, ed. by M. V. O'Shea and others, 8v.
The list of periodicals, with the additions for 1923, is given in Appendix D.
Pictures from the Library Art Club, on the following subjects, were exhibited in the Reading Room: Pocahontas; Columbia River and Mt. Hood; Life of Our Lord Jesus Christ, by Tissot; The Canary Islands; The Royal Academy, illustrated by Masters of col- or, Pt. IV., British and American; Brittany; Shakespeare and Stratford.
Among the gifts of the year were many publications from the State and Federal governments; books, pamphlets, and periodicals from individuals and societies; and annual reports, bulletins, and other publications from libraries, colleges and universities. Several books on accounting were presented to the library by William E. Beach; and a number of books of four-part music. which have been used by members of various societies of Weymouth, were given to the library by Eben P. Pratt of East Weymouth. The bust of William R. G. Bates, son of Joshua Bates, presented by William H. Cowing, is mentioned elsewhere in this report. The Trustees hereby acknowledge these gifts and thank the donors.
Travelling libraries of French, Italian, and Lithuanian books were lent to the Tufts Library for the use of its borrowers, by the Massachusetts Department of Education, Division of Public Lib- raries. These books were used by students, as well as by groups of our foreign-born citizens. Two sets of books in the Lithuanian language were especially enjoyed by one reader.
Few repairs were made this year, with the exception of new screens for the windows throughout the building and new awnings. It is hoped that during the coming year, it will be possible to re- decorate the interior of the library and to install an improved system of electric lighting.
With sorrow, we record the death of two of the trustees, who were active in service from the time of their election to office, in 1907, until their death.

Francis M. Drown, secretary, died on June 11, 1922. James H. Flint, member of the Book Committee, died on Octo- ber 12, 1922.
