As soon as it is expedient, it is recommended that all standpipes be painted, a new standpipe considered for South Weymouth, and a ventilator installed for the chlorine equipment.

The helpful co-operation of the Board of Water Commissioners, together with that of other Town Officials, has contributed much toward the operations of the Department.

The following summaries and tables outline the activities for the past vear.

Respectfully submitted,

Weymouth, Mass. January 24,1947

I have examined the Treasurer's and Collector's accounts in the Wey- mouth Water Department and believe them to be correct. Regular examina- tion of all transactions with a monthly verification of cash with the official statement of the Granite Trust Company satisfies me that the Treasurer has properly accounted for all funds intrusted to him.

The Library and the Branches are not open Sundays, legal holidays, nor the 17th of June.

The Library is for the use of all residents of Weymouth. Temporary residents are entitled to the same privileges as permanent residents.

Each card issued to an adult entitles the holder to one book of recent fiction (a book published within the last year), one current periodical, and any reasonable number of other books.

Children under Senior High School age are entitled to a card if the application is signed by a parent or guardian. Cards issued to children entitle the holders to three books, only one of which may be fiction.

All books from the circulating department, except the new fiction, may be kept for 14 days. At the request of the borrower, any book not in demand will be charged for one month, subject to recall after two weeks if requested by other borrowers. Fiction published within the last twelve months, and recent numbers of magazines are limited to seven days with no renewal privilege.

The vacation privilege allows a borrower to take books which are not recent publications for an extended time.

A book cannot be transferred from one card to another, but any 14-day book may be renewed at the library, by mail or by telephone (*), unless another borrower has asked to have the book reserved. The date due, the author and title of the book, and the borrower's number should be stated when the request for renewal is made.

Any book will be reserved at the request of a borrower, who will be notified as soon as the book is available. A charge of one cent is made for this service.

A fine of two cents a day will be incurred for each day's detention of a book after it is due. When a book is sent for by the librarian, it will be at the expense of the borrower.

For the convenience of residents in different parts of the town, books are exchanged through the stations as follows:

SIXTY-EIGHTH ANNUAL REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES OF THE TUFTS LIBRARY

The Tufts Library is the people's library. It is your library. It has grown in its sixty-eight years of service to the Town of Weymouth from a collection of twenty-four hundred volumes to one of more than sixty-three thousand. In the past year 2,662 new books were added. This is an average of 83/4 books per day for each day that the library was open. And the library is open all day, every day, except Sundays and holidays. Approximately one third of the books are fiction, one third are non-fiction and the remaining third are children's books.

The use of the Tufts Library is increasing. 9,062 more books were borrowed in 1946 than in the previous year. The library made fifteen hundred new friends, new borrowers. 8,416 people read 171,260 books in 1946. If each one had purchased these books for himself it would have meant an average expenditure of $41.08. Actually the cost to him from his taxes was only $1.16. This was the admission fee to a world of recreation, to imagination, adventure, romance, to history, to travel in far places, to friendships with great men through all ages, to a rapidly enlarging world of science. It was the only tuition asked for a people's university, where knowledge waits in open books on every subject, craft or skill. It opened doors of wonder to small children; it provided story hours and, for the older boys and girls, class instruction in the essentials of Library use. It offered reference service to the student, the business man and the club woman. And, as a sort of interest on the invest- ment, answers were given by telephone to the Tellotest Quiz questions approximately 6,000 times from the Main Library and nearly as many more times from the two Branch Libraries. Regretfully the library had to limit this service to the hours of 10 to 11 a.m. and 5 to 6 p.m. in order to free the telephone sufficiently to allow for other library business.
