The facilities of the various clinics were used for guidance, speech correction, and the classification and placement of retarded children. Transportation to clinics is rather a troublesome prob- lem, and time is taken from other school duties. The recent offer by members of the Scituate Nursing Service to assist with trans- portation is very much appreciated. It is indicative of their interest in school work and a willingness to serve the community.
In regard to the correction of remedial defects, those of vision seem to create a great deal of misunderstanding. Primarily this responsibility belongs to the parents. Frequently the family budget can not be stretched to include this expenditure and many times parents are reluctant to seek help. This means long periods of delay before the correction takes place. Well meaning people sometimes think that the school should take care of the situation. It can not be done by the school. Some person, private or official agency or group must guarantee payment for examinations and

glasses, even in a clinic. Local fund raising groups have a golden opportunity to help with this problem.
The so called nuisance diseases, impetigo, scabies, ringworm of skin and scalp and pediculosis were not a serious threat to the health of school children during the year. The few offenders with pediculosis were excluded at intervals. If the parents of these few cooperated, the problem need not exist.
Memories of past difficulties fade into insignificance as I look forward to the pleasure of working in the health unit of the new school building. With sincere thanks to co-workers,
Respectfully submitted,
MARGARET J. O'DONNELL, R.N., School Nurse.

SELECTMEN'S REPORT
REPORT OF THE BOARD OF SELECTMEN
We are happy to submit to the Citizens of Scituate our An- nual Report.
In June 1950, Mr. Dennis H. Shea, Chairman of the Board of Selectmen, resigned because of poor health. He had served Scituate long and faithfully, both as moderator and selectman. Hundreds had sought and received his counsel on town affairs.
Our new central Elementary school was opened last Spring. This beautiful building is perhaps the first school edifice in the eastern part of the country. When the doors were opened, a committee was already at work on plans to extend the High School. This addition is necessary to accommodate the larger classes com- ing in from the Elementary school.
What was considered the third hurricane in twelve years swept through the town in September, causing severe damage to Glades Road, Minot, with some cracking of the sea wall. After repairs had been made we were struck by a second and even more devas- tating storm which sucked out the sea wall in places and caused further damage to the road. As a result, additional funds had to be expended to lessen the risk of property damage in that area. The sea walls along the town's entire length are in poor condition and much work will have to be done on them soon.
The unofficial report of the census taken in April 1950 records Scituate as having a population of approximately 5900 as com- pared to 4100 in 1940. Since many homes unfinished at the time of the census taking are now completed and occupied, we assume that the figure is even higher.
Our town with its great scenic beauty, its unusual recreational facilities, its schools, its churches, and its healthful community life will continue to attract those who seek the better things in life.
Respectfully submitted, ROBERT H. TILDEN WILLIAM F. SLATTERY WILLIAM OTIS ANDREWS, Chairman
