SCHOOL COMMITTEE REPORT
REPORT OF THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE
To the Citizens of Scituate:
The School Committee submits its annual report for the year ending December 31, 1951.
Steadily increasing enrollment presents a continuous problem to the school authorities. The addition to the high school is in its final plans, and construction should be definitely under way in the spring. Something must be done immediately to take care of the steady flow of students into the elementary schools. An article in this year's warrant calls for a Committee to investigate the elemen- tary school problem and decide whether to build a new school, enlarge the Central Elementary School, or remodel Hatherly and Jenkins Schools.
The increased enrollment naturally demands more teachers. In order to secure the best possible teachers in the East, the Com- mittee has made a new salary schedule comparable to those of the leading systems of New England.
The work on the Tennis Courts and Athletic Field has been completed. The new Tennis Courts modeled after the hard courts at the Longwood Cricket Club received constant use during the summer, and the Athletic Field was used for the home football games and will be ready for both games and practice in baseball.
Detailed reports of the activities of our school will be found under the various school headings.
Respectfully submitted,
SAMUEL J. TILDEN, Chairman DORIS D. WARD, Secretary FRED T. WATERMAN MARGARET B. MILES NELS H. SANDBERG
