During the year, the remainder of our equipment which was ordered in 1959 arrived and was installed. This unit is a three- way unit which consists of an electronic siren, outside speaker
60
and amplifier. The two-way radio previously installed has been of great service to the department and has improved the effi- ciency of the department.
During the year, with the constant threat of these "Gang Wars" starting up, and possible damage being done by them, it was necessary to press an additional officer into service to assist the regular officer while on duty. In view of this fact, I have recommended that a "sum" of money be appropriated so that this additional man may be available each night throughout the year.
The Cruiser traveled a total of 19,350 miles during the year. Expenses for maintaining same were greater than anticipated. After lengthy discussion with the Finance Committee regarding condition of present cruiser, I deem it advisable and recommend that said vehicle be traded in this year.
Accidents have increased considerably throughout the year as has been previously mentioned. Our compulsory insurance has again been raised for the coming year. This rate is based on the accidents both in and out of town, in which residents of this town are involved and after investigation are found to be at fault. I urge you again to be careful at all times and to con- tinuously readjust your driving habits according to conditions.
I take great pleasure in being able to report to you that our highways have been free of any pedestrian or motor vehicle fatalities during the past year, making a total of 30 months our highways have been death free. During the year we had only 5 accidents in which anyone involved required a great amount of hospitalization.
Police Memorial Sunday was again observed and wreaths were placed at the cemetery in honor of departed members of our department. Prayers were said at the resting place of our departed by a member of the clergy, for which we are very grateful.
In closing I would like to take this opportunity to "thank" each and everyone of you for your cooperation. Working to- gether for the "good" of all makes for a better community. Keep up the good work.
Respectfully submitted, WILLIAM D. RONDEAU Chief of Police
61 REPORT OF THE TREE WARDEN
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen and Townspeople:
I herewith submit my Annual Report of the Tree Warden:
I have cut down and removed 43 dead elms and trimmed other trees in all sections of the town. I was able to top ten large trees so that I could finish taking them down and dis- pose of the rest of them in the early part of 1961. Due to the hurricane damage in September I used some of the appropria- tion for that work. Without the aid of the Highway Depart- ment and equipment, I would not have been able to do all of this work.
Respectfully submitted WILLIAM NUTTALL Tree Warden
REPORT OF THE MOTH SUPERINTENDENT
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen:
I herewith submit my Annual Report of the Moth Super- intendent for 1960:
This year the townspeople appropriated $2,600 for spray- ing the town twice which I supervised for moths, elm beetle and mosquitoes and had good results. Am asking the same amount for 1961.
Respectfully submitted WILLIAM NUTTALL Moth Supervisor

63
Fire school was held at Upton with Capt. James T. McPart- land as instructor, under the direction of Herbert F. Travers, Chief of the Worcester Fire Department. Eleven firemen from Mendon attended these classes and the information gained will be passed on to the members who were unable to attend.
The Firemen sponsored a parade on the evening of July 4th, with prizes for costumes and vehicles. Refreshments were served to all.
The Fire Station was decorated at Christmas and the fire- men, together with the members of the Roger L. Wood Post, American Legion, and the Mendon Grange, decorated and lighted the tree on Founders Park.
On July 10, 1960, Miss Diane Podeski, daughter of Stanley and Yvette Podeski of 13 Clayton Street, Cambridge, Mass., was accidentally drowned at Lakeview Park beach.
We have come through the year 1960 with a minimum of fire loss, about eighty cents per capita. This is very satisfactory.
May I thank the Firemen and all those who helped to keep our fires and fire losses down.
Respectfully submitted, WILLIAM F. IRONS Fire Chief

January 7, 1961
To the Board of Selectmen:
Gentlemen:
The Forest Fire Department answered 18 alarms during 1960. Fires burned over ten acres of wood and brush land and eight acres of grass land. Over 400 burning permits were issued with only four that went out of control.
Causes of these fires were as follows:
7 Incinerators

Teachers in the elementary grades have taken books for their class-rooms, bringing up the juvenile circulation. The largest number of books checked out in one day was 246; the smallest, 41; and the average, 88. Circulation by classes was as follows: fiction, 3194; magazines, 821; juvenile, 3392; biography, 343; history and travel, 181; literature and fine arts, 70; science, and useful arts, 127; all others, 134. Seventy-three new borrowers registered.
During 1960 the Town purchased 57 new books, 67 were purchased by the Fletcher Fund and one, Rand-McNally's Cosmopolitan World Atlas by the Annie Ellis Fund; 52 were received by Gift, making a total of 177. We wish to thank the donors of books,-Charles and Hazel Leonard, Mrs. Viola Barnes, Mr. and Mrs. James Armstrong, Mrs. Annie Taft Phelps, Mr. Ernest Bragg, Mr. Reginald Cook, Miss Helen Heath, Mrs. G. Arthur Small, Mrs. Marion L. Nutter, Miss Florence Aldrich, Mrs. Edmund Warren, Thelma Pharnes, Beverly Larson, Glenna and Linda Ouellette.

67
brarian, composed of Mrs. Robert D. Robinson, chairman, Mrs. Theodore Giatas, Mrs. Donald Kearsley and Mrs. Ed- mund Warren. There was an essay and poster contest, and Open House on April 5th with a display of new books. The librarian attended two Area Meetings of Librarians, one in Ashland and one in Sherborn. Mrs. Lorna Rhodes has been substitute librarian and Sandra Pharnes, high school assistant.

Respectfully submitted, VESTELLA M. DANIELS Librarian
REPORT OF TRUSTEES OF TAFT PUBLIC LIBRARY
The Trustees of the Taft Public Library submit the annual report of the Library for year ending December 31, 1960.
The Financial Report shows the expenditures during the year and the Report of the Librarian gives a full statement of the use made of the Library and its facilities by the towns- people. It is pleasing to note that there has been a continued increase in book circulation and that the reference materials of the Library are being extensively used.
There have been only minor repairs necessary during the year. The proposed budget for 1961 provides for some addi- tional book shelves in the lower room of the building. A major repair in the near future will be new shingles on the roof.
The Librarian and the Trustees urge the members of the community to visit the Library and make use of its offerings.
Respectfully submitted, HARRY C. YORK, Chairman VESTELLA M. DANIELS HAROLD METCALF KENNETH L. SHARP HENRY P. CLOUGH
