At the last annual Town Meeting it was voted to purchase a vehicle for the Police Dept. Purchase of said vehicle was made and placed into service on May 23, 1959. Means of Communication, namely a 2-way Radio was placed in the cruiser along with a Base station at the Police station and a Remote Control Unit in my home. With this arrangement it is possible to be constantly in
64
touch with the officer on duty. The radio plus the cruiser has improved the efficiency of the Police Dept. a great deal. The telephone extension on the Police phone to my home has also added greatly to the efficiency of the de- partment, as there is now 24 hour coverage on this line.
The Cruiser-Ambulance equipped with a stretcher has been used several times to transport the sick and the injured to the hospital. Additional equipment is needed to make this vehicle more serviceable, which I hope can be obtained. The Cruiser as of December 31, 1939 had traveled a total of 13,070 miles.
This year the rate on our compulsory insurance rate has been increased. This rate is set by the number of ac- cidents in which are involved residents of the Town, both in and out of Town. During the past year we had only 2 bad accidents which required any great amount of hos- pitalization. I am very happy to report that up to this time our highways have been free of any Pedestrian or Motor Vehicle fatalities for a period of over 18 months. This is made possible by your being a careful and con- siderate operator of your motor vehicle. Every Police De- partment tries to keep its highways free of accidents and deaths, without your continued cooperation we are help- less. Let's all cooperate.
On May 31, 1959, wreaths were placed on the graves of our departed former police officers at the cemetery. Prayers were said by a member of the Clergy, for which we are very grateful. This is an annual event and takes place on the first Sunday after Memorial Day.
