Of the pupils who graduated from our grammar schools last June, only about sixty per cent. entered the high school in September, a small number considering the advantages the school offers. Some, it is true, must leave school as soon as the law will allow and become bread winners. Others in their haste to become self-supporting spend a few months at a business college and eventually find employment as clerks or stenographers at relatively small wages. Promotions from these positions will come, if merited, but slowly, I believe, owing to immaturity and lack of thorough preparation for a business career. Busi- ness men are expecting more and more each year from those seeking employment ; normal and professional schools are setting a higher standard for admittance, and all along the line the demand is for better preparation for service. From these facts the conclusion must follow that the high school graduate will, after a year or more at a good business school, be worth much more to his employer than would a grammar school graduate with the same busi-
77
ness training. His greater maturity of thought and his wider outlook are factors of no small value in the business world, and are qualities that will place him at once in the line of promotion to better positions.
With our excellent corps of teachers, and with the relatively small number of pupils in each class, I believe our school is better fitted to lay a broad and firm founda- tion for successful careers than are many larger and more pretentious schools with large numbers and overcrowded curricula. It is my earnest wish that more of our people may see their way clear to give their boys and girls the advantages of our home high school.
TEACHERS' MEETINGS.
During the past year several profitable and interest- ing teachers' meetings have been held. At these meetings I have brought before the teachers matters of general interest relating to school work. The larger part of the time, however, has been given to reading and discussing McMurry's Elements of General Method. These discus- sions have been valuable in furnishing teachers and super- intendent opportunities to exchange ideas on questions of vital interest touching the daily work of our schools. It is my purpose to continue this work during the present year.
SPECIAL REPORTS.
Miss Newman, onr supervisor of drawing has been granted leave of absence for the winter term, to avail her- self of an opportunity to spend a few months in study and travel in Italy. Her report for the past year will therefore be omitted. The work in drawing has suffered but little, if any interruption under Miss Bartlett, a teacher of ex- perience, who has been secured as substitute during Miss Newman's absence.
78
Your attention is called to the report of the super- visor of music and especially to that portion in which reference is made to the recent action of Harvard Univer- sity, whereby music is made an accredited study.
Mr. E. H. Grout, Superintendent of Schools, West Bridgewater, Mass.
In this my fourth annual report of music work in the public schools of the town of West Bridgewater, I take pleasure in reviewing much excellent work accomplished during the year and wish to consider some points where improvement could be made.
Recent action taken by Harvard College whereby music is made an accredited study, ranking with language and mathematics in entrance examinations, gives new life and purpose to this study in all grade, and high schools.
Music was originally introduced into public schools as a medium for moral precept contained in the words of songs. It has become evident that children are not only morally and physically improved by music in school but that they also possess great capacity for the subject along artistic lines.
To quote a recent writer on this subject, "Music in the public schools is receiving more attention than ever before and Massachusetts is a pioneer in the field."
Recent investigation by the State Board of Education reveals the fact, that in many high schools the sole aim is to learn a few songs for graduation, but in the English High School in Cambridge there is an optional course in harmony during third and fourth years.
The High School in Springfield has two music teach- ers, a teacher of singing and a teacher of musical theory.
This school offers the most complete opportunity for music now given in the state and may well serve as a model for all other high schools.
It will be seen that the importance of written work in
79
music, and of individual singing, so strongly advocated in my former reports, has not been over estimated but is . along the line of new requirements constantly made by educators who realize the benefit resulting from this im- portant branch of study.
Drill in writing music in preparatory schools has en- abled us to do some work in elementary harmony in the Howard High School during the past term.
Time for such work has necessarily been limited but in December, pupils were requested to write an original me- lody to the words presented them and the results obtained were surprisingly good.
Too much cannot be said in praise of the constant effort made by teachers, to secure a good foundation in the several branches of music work-Sight reading of exer- cises, class work on songs, individual singing of the Wea- ver exercises, and written work as required for all grades.
Owing to the many grades in charge of some of the teachers, this is a difficult task to accomplish and while some progress has been made, more could be done were it possible to consolidate schools and have fewer grades in a room.
In one large city in this state where the music is con- sidered second to none, experts declare much of the credit due to the hearty support and intelligent appreciation of the school board. Quite as readily do we thank the School Board of West Bridgewater for the assistance granted.
No loss, to town or schools, is permitted through delay in supplying materials for work, and the regular teachers as well as your director of music appreciate this help and also the encouragement given by Superintendent and friends of the schools.
Respectfully submitted.
Mildred S. Jones.

CONCLUSION.
Permit me, in concluding this report, to say that the year just closed has been one of quiet, steady progress in every department. No radical changes have been attempt- ed, but whenever an opportunity for improvement has appeared we have availed ourselves of it.
It is my privilege at this time, and pleasure as well, to extend to the citizens of the town a cordial invitation to inspect the work of the schools, and to express to teachers and to members of the school committee my sincere thanks for courtesies extended me and for helpful cooper- ation in the work of the past year.
Respectfully submitted,
EDGAR HOMER GROUT.
