Changes may be made in this to accommodate different schools.

But few changes in our corps of teachers have oc- curred during the year, and such changes as seemed necessary in books or school arrangements have been made with the concurrence of our experienced superin- tendent.

The loss of principals in both the Center and Cochesett primary schools was due in large measure to their obtaining positions in schools of but one or two grades.

For some years the problem of so arranging the grades at Cochesett, as to adjust the work properly and have classes in the upper room of reasonable size, has been before the Committee. It is not economy of time for teachers to have, in the higher grades, but few pupils in a class, and small towns are now bringing these grades together when practicable.

Besides the increased interest of the pupils in their studies from larger numbers, there is the important addi- tional advantage that the future citizens of the town can thus become acquainted with each other.

At the opening of the Fall term the necessity of a change at Cochesett was apparent, and the 9th grade, (numbering but 4 pupils), was removed to the Center grammar school. This permitted the transfer of the 5th grade, (II pupils), from the lower school of 47 pupils to

63

the upper room where there were but 22 pupils remaining.

These changes brought the needed relief to the lower room, without increasing the recitations in the upper room.

Establishing a regular assistant in the Center schools, made it necessary to provide a recitation room in the grammar. building, which was done in the spring vacation by partitioning off a part of the upper hall way, and in the summer, connection was made with the small furnace to heat this room. The cost of this work and also of a new flight of stairs in the Cochesett building will be found in the financial report under "Repairs and permanent im- provements."

The south building was put in good repairs within, where a new ceiling was needed in the school room and entry, and was newly shingled.

$100 additional to the usual $250 for repairs will pro- bably be sufficient for this year.

The exact cost of conveyance cannot be readily deter- mined at this time of the year, as changes caused by promotions occur at the beginning of the Fall term, but any probable excess of the usual grant of $500 can be met from the Massachusetts School Fund Income.

The death in June of Mr. Bosworth who had served upon the Board for 14 years, removed a devoted member of our Committee. His place was filled in October by the election of Frank L. Howard at a joint meeting of the Selectmen and School Committee; and at the same time Mr. T. Prescott Snell was chosen in place of Mrs. C. H. Copeland whose health would not allow her to perform the duties for which, by her successful experience as a teacher, she was well fitted.

There should be chosen at the annual meeting of the town two members of the Board for three years, and one for one year.
