REPORT OF

LIBRARIAN OF PUBLIC LIBRARY.

The present year has been most encouraging for the library, the distribution in books being large and an increase in maga- zines taken out.

The location of the library, so near the central schools, en- ables many families of the outlying districts to make much more use of our books, as they can send to the library by their chil- dren who attend those schools.

Through the interest of the teachers, some of our books are brought into use in connection with school work. By this means the pupils are instructed in the wider uses of the library, and the teachers, by their suggestions, encourage a taste for better reading. During the noon hour, in which the library is open, it is a pleasure to see some of the older boys finding en- tertainment in the many magazines, or looking up points of in- formation in the encyclopedias.

The long book shelf connected with the librarian's desk en- ables us to place before the public many valuable books which in past years, owing to limited space, were not known to be in the library.

Many of our young people prefer books of adventure, his- torical and mechanical works.

No age limit among the younger readers is required, the child's ability and interest in reading being considered, and par- ents or guardians are held responsible for careful use of books.

63

The public documents sent to the library within the year are ready for reference, with others of previous years, in the room assigned for this department. Among them are the "Re- port of the Smithsonian Institute," Report of the Board of Ed- ucation," and "Manual of the General Court," "Report of the Free Public Library Commission," and "Vital Statistics."

The magazines taken are the Century, World's Work, Scribner's, Good Housekeeping, Atlantic, Cosmopolitan, Re- view of Reviews, American, New England, Outlook, Outing, McClure's, Harper's, St. Nicholas, Popular Mechanics, Cassier's and American Photography.

The number of volumes now in the library is 6,543, of which 193 were added during the year.

There were issued during the year, for school and home use 6,936 volumes, classified as follows :

Poetry and art,
