REPORT OF COMMITTEE ON WELCOMING HOME THE TEWKSBURY WORLD WAR VETERANS

At the annual Town meeting held in 1919 the Town appropriated five hundred dollars to be used for a Memorial for Tewksbury World War Veterans and a committee of three, namely Howard W. Foster, Charles H. Battles and Eugene N. Patterson, appointed to carry out the wishes of the Town. The Committee elected Mr. Foster chair- man.

After considering a number of propositions your committee de- cided on a marble slab, and a contract was made with Mr. Frank Hadley of Lowell, to place a Memorial Tablet in the vestibule of the New Town Hall, which work has been completed.

At the Annual Town Meeting held in 1920 an additional sum of $1000.00 was appropriated and plans were made and carried through on Memorial Day, 1920, as follows: Public exercises in the New Town Hall in the afternoon under the direction of the committee. Presentation of Tablet to the Town by Howard W. Foster, chairman, and acceptance for the Town by the Chairman of Board of Se- lectmen, Irving F. French. The presentation of the Town testimo- nial, consisting of a gold filled watch fob with their names and date on one side, and the Town Seal on the other, to each World War Vet- eran by Lieut. Col. Perkins in behalf of the Town.

A banquet was given to the World War Veterans after the pub- lic exercises.

The committee placed the Grand Military Ball held in the even- ing in the hands of the World War Veterans who had full charge and directions of all details relating thereto. During the entire work the assistance and advice of the World War Veterans was given to the committee and to them and all who assisted in any manner we return our thanks. For complete detail of expenditures by your committee see Auditor's Report.

The records of the World War Veterans so far as completed, is hereto annexed. The committee has made strenuous efforts to make it complete. The Veterans are widely scattered and the delay is un- aviodable.

Respectfully submitted,

HOWARD W. FOSTER, CHARLES H. BATTLES, EUGENE N. PATTERSON,

Committee.

PUBLIC LIBRARY

The Trustees of the Public Library submit the following report for the year ending December 31, 1920:

The report of the Auditor will give in detail the expenditure in and for the Public Library.

The report of the Librarian will give a very clear account of the Library, its condition, the number of books in use, and the number of books stored; also the circulation of books during the year.

Besides supplying the Centre, the Library furnishes a box of books for those sections of town which desire it.

The Community Club of Shawsheen School has been added for a district box and the interest manifested there is very satisfactory to the Library officials.

The Trustees commend the efforts of the Town Hall Building Committee in providing quarters in Town Hall for Library purposes.

The improvement in the order of discipline noted in the last Annual Report has continued during the past year, especially so since the removal to the new Town Hall.

The Trustees commend the Librarian and her assistants for their earnest and courteous efforts during the past year. To the sub-libra- rians in all the districts the thanks of the Trustees is hereby ten- dered for their earnest efforts for their districts.

We request the Town to grant us for the Public Library an ap- propriation of $750, and the money arising from taxation of dogs.

Respectfully yours,

LIBRARIAN'S REPORT

To the Board of Trustees of the Tewksbury Public Library :

The following report is respectfully submitted :

The circulation of books for the entire year shows a slight de- crease from last year, the reason being due to the fact that the libra- ry was closed during the summer months.

Notwithstanding this the circulation of books on Wednesdays is larger than last year.

The box formerly sent to the Oaklands district has been discon- tinued and one is now being sent to the Shawsheen School.

There is a marked increase in the circulation at the North West district.

The following magazines are now subscribed for by the library : Bookman, Century, Cosmopolitan, Country Life, Current Opinion, Delineator, Harper's Illustrated World, Ladies' Home Journal, Munsey's, Literary Digest, National Geographic, Pictorial Review, Review of Reviews, Scribner's, St. Nicholas, Woman's Home Com- panion and World's Work.

The circulation of magazines has been about the same during the time the library has been open.

The latter part of June all books were called in, in order that all books might be inspected and removed to our new quarters at the Town Hall.

The following report has been made up to September 1, 1920 :

Fiction on shelves 5,135

Non-fiction on shelves. 4,266

Fiction discarded, stored in barn at Town Hall .. 152

Non-fiction discarded, stored in barn at Town Hall. 16

Donations discarded, stored at Town Hall

250

Old Books sold, waste paper

100

To be rebound .. 38

Stored in basement closet at Town Hall.

547

10,504

This does not include books added between September 1, 1920, and January 1, 1921.

It was found advisable when the library re-opened, September 1st, to make all books added during the year 1920 7-day books. This was done in order to give a greater circulation of the newer books.
