Sybil Carter, daughter of Jonathan and Sybil (Johnson) Carter, born Feb. 14, 1773 Her parents were married in Woburn, Jan. 27, 1768. Jonathan Carter, her father, was admitted to membership in Woburn First Church, Jan. 13, 1770; and Sybil Carter, wife of Jonathan, her mother, was admitted likewise to the same church, Nov. 26, 1775. At the time of Bunker Hill battle and the burning of Charlestown, June 17, 1775, and possibly as early as April 20, 1775, Thomas Frothing- ham, John Lamson, and Jacob Rhodes, all of Charlestown, whose respec- tive deaths are severally commemorated in epitaphs 237, 238, 239, probably, as did others, retired into the country.

Eleazer Flagg Poole (epitaph 240), son of Jonathan Poole, Esq. (epitaph 174), and Esther (Flagg) Poole, was born May 24, 1734, in Woburn; was styled Ensign and Lieutenant; and was treasurer of Woburn from 1762 to 1773. ( Vide Sewall's Woburn, 298, 573, 583, etc. )

The register of their marriage does not appear on Woburn Records; it being probably about 1756, since Mary, their first child on public record, was born in that year. The " six weeping children " of Eleazer Flagg and Mary Poole, mentioned in epitaph 240, were probably the following. viz. : (1) Mary, born Dec. 28, 1756, in Woburn ; (2) Jonathan, born Sept. 5, 1758; (3) Eleazer Flagg, born Jan. 19, 1761, married Molly Reed, of Woburn, Sept. 8, 1779; (4) Rufus, born March 30, 1769; (5) Esther, and (6) Theodore Carter Poole (twins), born July 7, 1772.

IV. Benjamin4 Simonds (Benjamin3, Benjamin2, William1), born June 1. 1724 ; married Susanna, daughter of Lieut. James and Mary (Fowle) Simonds, and great-grand-daughter of William Simonds, March 29, 1748. He died in Woburn. Dec. 10, 1783. His wife, Susanna, died Nov. 15, 1816, aged 92. They had issue : (1) Susanna, born Feb. 11, 1749; mar- ried, first, Ebenezer Page, of Bedford, Dec. 4, 1781 ; second, John Webber, of Bedford, Nov. 21, 1786. She died Feb. 5, 1825. (2) Benjamin, born Dec. 30, 1751; died Dec. 24, 1753. (3) Benjamin, born May 20, 1754 ; mar- ried Ruth, daughter of James and Anna (Lawrence) Simonds, May 22, 1783, and died February, 1827. She was born in Leominster (where her parents removed from Woburn in 1744), July 3, 1757, and was grand- daughter of Lieut. James Simonds. (4) Zebedee, born Feb. 23, 1756; died July 2, 1778. (5) Nathan, born Oct. 23, 1757 : died March 16. 1827. He married Bathsheba, widow of Luther Simonds, May 21, 1795, and succeeded to the paternal estate of William Simonds, the ancestor. (6)

V. Benjamin3 Simonds (Benjamin4, Benjamin3, Benjamin2, William1), born in Woburn, May 20, 1754, and died in Bedford, in 1827. He was a lame man, having been born with a clump foot. On account of this physical disability, he was apprenticed to the shoemaking trade in Lynn, and followed that trade during his life. He moved to Bedford in 1785, but returned to Woburn two years later. He lived in a house on the site of the old Bacon house, corner of Pleasant and Reed Streets. His house was burned in 1797, and he then built the present (1890) house. In consid- eration of the sum of $3,800, he sold his property to " Joseph Chickering, clerk," Oct. 29, 1804, and moved to Bedford, permanently, and bought a farm of Mr. Joseph Converse, in the southern part of the town. In the deed to Chickering, the estate in Woburn is described as " a messuage of 43 acres, bounded southerly on the road from Woburn meeting-house to Lexington, except a small part of the way on land of heirs of Elisha Tottingham; thence west and north on land of John Flagg until it comes to land belonging to Loammi Baldwin, Esq. ; thence by said Baldwin's land and land of heirs of John Hastings, which was formerly the Fox place, to the road first mentioned, being the farm sold to me in 1787 by Isaac Johnson, administrator of Josiah Johnson, Esq., afterwards con- veyed by me to Elisha and William Penniman, and by them reconveyed to me in 1802."
By his wife, Ruth, Benjamin Simonds had issue : (1) Benjamin, born in Woburn, Feb. 16, 1784. (2) Zebedee, born in Bedford, March 12, 1786; married Amittai, daughter of John and Bethiah (Lane) Webber, June 25, 1807, and died Sept. 20, 1826. (3) Susanna, born in Woburn, Sept. 12, 1789; died June 18, 1796. (4) Mary, born in Woburn, June 11, 1792; died June 18, 1796, within ten minutes of Susanna's death, and they were buried in the same grave. (5) William, born in Woburn, Sept. 21, 1794 ; married Amelia Flint of Middleton, Mass. (6) John, born in Woburn, July 6, 1797; married Anna Hill of Billerica. (7) James, born in Woburn, Aug. 16, 1801; died at birth.
VI. Zebedee6 Simonds (Benjamin5, Benjamin4, Benjamin3, Benjamin2, William1), born in Bedford, March 12, 1786. His wife was born in Bedford, Aug. 31, 1789, and died there Feb. 20, 1853. Zebedee Simonds was the first person in Bedford to manufacture shoes to any extent for the Boston mar- ket He became a deacon of the church in Bedford in 1825, having joined the church in 1810. He died of virulent typhus fever, after a distress- ing illness of about seven days. His issue were : (1) John Webber. born Jan. 14, 1808 ; died October, 1870. (2) George, born Jan. 15, 1810 ; married Ann Jaquith of Billerica, and died in Bedford. (3) Amittai, born April 7, 1812; married Daniel Flagg (born May 6, 1806) of Acton, afterwards of Westford, Nov. 1, 1832. She survived him, and died March 17, 1887. (4) William, born April 2, 1814; died June 8, 1838, of consumption. (5) Henry, born Jan. 19, 1817; died in Lynn, Jan. 27, 1873. He came to Woburn as an apprentice to Charles Choate, in 1833, and subsequently engaged in the express business between Woburn and Boston. An adver- tisement of " Simonds's Woburn and Boston Railroad Express " appears in the Guide-Post, Nov. 5, 1846. (6) Harriet, born Nov. 6, 1818; died of consumption, Feb. 28, 1843. (7) Edward, born Jan. 28, 1820; married Mary Tidd of Woburn, June 13, 1844. He came to Woburn, May 1, 1837,

(8) Bethigh, born July 23, 1821; married Hiram Whitford ( born in Hillsboro', N. H., June 19, 1818), at Bedford, March 31, 1842. (9) Zebedee, born May 10, 1827; died May 29, 1827 ; was a posthumous child.

Samuel Cooke, pastor of Cambridge Second Precinct, now Arlington). She was born Nov. 16, 1751 (Woburn Records) ; daughter of Henry (epitaph 195) and Lucy Gard- ner. 1784 [N. " Obadiah Kendall, of Woburn," `and "Elizabeth Miles, of Concord " (her parents), were married in Lex- ington, Jan. 27, 1756.

Lydia (Jones) Thompson, of Concord, married Samuel Thompson, Fsq., Feb. 26, 1770, his second wife; maiden name, Wheeler perhaps. (Diary mentions Dad and Brot. Wheeler, at Concord, sometimes Captain.) His first wife was Abigail Tidd (epitaph 212). Esther Wyman, his third wife, died before his decease, in 1818. He died in 1820. ( Vide epitaphs 95 and 105, Second Yard.)

Samuel Gardner, of Charlestown, admitted member of Woburn First Church, April 5, 1770 (vide Church Mannal, p. 11) ; was born Feb. 3, 1740 (Woburn Records), son of Henry (epitaph 195) and Lncy Gardner His wife, Dorothy, died 1787 (epitaph 260). "1790, May. Samuel Gardner died 6th, and buried 8th." (S. Thompson's Diary.)

Zechariah Symmes, born Sept. 1, 1707, son of William (epitaph 198) and Ruth (Converse) Symmes (epitaph 185). ( l'ide Brooks's History, Med- ford, 543. ) Married Judith Eames, Oct. 29, 1741. She died July 24, 1795, aged 84. ( Vide epitaph 10, Second Yard; Sewall's Woburn, 610, also 575. Aiso Vinton's Symmes Memorial, Boston, 1873, pp. 40, 41, for sketch of him.)

Edward Richardson, "of Reading," born in Woburn, March 12, 1705, son of Jacob and Hannah (Converse) Richardson (epitaph 140) ; married Jerusha Wyman (epitaph 252). "Edward Richardson of Reading " was admitted member of Woburn First Church, Aug. 8, 1784. (Church Manual, p. 12.)

(267.) [Marble tablet on granite obelisk.] "To the Memory of the Hon. Loammi Baldwin Who died Oct. 20'th 1807 Æt. 63. Erected by his children."
Hon. Loammi Baldwin, born Jan. 10, 1744-45, son of James and Ruth (Richardson) Baldwin, and a descendant of Deacon Henry Baldwin, one of the early settlers of Woburn; major and lieutenant-colonel of Ger- rish's regiment, and colonel of the same, 1775-76, and with his command present with Gen. Washington at Trenton, Dec. 26, 1776; resigned and discharged from the Continental Army about 1777, for ill health, and returned to his native town; served for a long succession of years on important town business; appointed high sheriff, county Middlesex, in 1780; represented Woburn in the General Court, 1778, 1779, and 1800- 1805; a prominent candidate for other important offices in the State : member of American Academy of Arts and Sciences; M. A., Harvard College, 1785 ; the projector of Middlesex Canal, opened 1803; the name- sake of the Baldwin apple; friend and correspondent of Count Rum- ford. Married Mary, daughter of James Fowle, Esq., July 9, 1772; died Sept. 27, 1786; and Margaret, daughter of Josiah Fowle, May 26, 1791 : died Aug. 8, 1799. Col. Baldwin's spacious mansion, still standing at North Woburn, or a portion of it, according to an oral statement of the late Dr. Benj. Cutter, is the oldest house in town. March' 5, 1810. Art. 14. Relative to giving liberty to the heirs of Colonel Loammi Baldwin, deceased, to build a tomb. Voted that the request of heirs of Loammi Baldwin, Esq., deceased, be granted, and that the same be left discretionary with the standing committee in which of the burying yards in said town, said tomb should be built. All votes of the town to the contrary notwithstanding. (Woburn Town Records.)
