In 1850, John A. Boutelle prepared the following family register of Deacon John Cummings, son of Ebenezer Cummings : -


I. Isaac Cummings, the family ancestor, said to be of Scottish origin, was of Topsfield. In April, 1652 [1662], he had land deeded to him by


Samuel Simonds situated near the line of Ipswich Isaac Cummings deeded land to his son-m-law John Jewett, April 24, 1662. In his will, dated May 8, 1677, he mentions his son-in-law John Jewett, his son-in- law John Pease, his son Isaac, his grandson Isaac (son of his son Isaac), and appoints his son John sole executor.

The mother, Nancy (Thompson) Hosmer, was born June 3, 1790; died Sept. 28. 1850; was the youngest daughter and child of Abijah (epitaph 110) and Sarah (Burtt) Thompson (epitaph 110).

Lieut. Willard Jones, died Dec. 29, 1824, aged 55. He married Bridget Thompson, Aug. 20, 1793, who died Aug. 28, 1856, aged 85 years and 4 months, daughter of Hiram and Bridget (Snow) Thompson, and grand- daughter of Capt. Ebenezer and Hannah (Converse) Thompson. She lived in the house at North Woburn where Count Rumford was born, being their grandparents' mansion. It is still standing, the present property of the Rumford Historical Association. She was born April 18, 1771. Wil- lard Jones, of Wilmington, and Bridget Thompson, of Woburn, were married Aug. 20, 1793.

Sarah Richardson, widow of Bartholomew Richardson, was daughter of Josiah and Sarah (Evans) Converse, and was born Aug. 26. 1737. She married Bartholomew Richardson, April 10, 1760. (See epitaph 61.)

" The memory of his amiable manners, affectionate kindness, and ardent piety, will long be cherished by his bereaved family, the church of which he was a member, and a numerous circle of friends.


" Adieu, dear friend, now on Canan's blest shore, Not parted long, and soon to part no more ; Yet take these tears, mortality's relief, And till we share thy joys, forgive our grief, These little rights, a stone, a verse receive, T'is all thy mourning family can give."


Samuel 7 Tidd ( Samuel 6, Samuel5, Ebenezer+, John3, John 2, John 1), son of Samuel and Susanna, born Nov. 6. 1787; was prominent in the mili- tary history of Woburn. He was colonel of the Second Regiment, First Brigade, Third Division, etc. ; deacon of the Baptist Church; selectman, 1823, 1824, 1825; member of the Handel and Haydn Society, of Boston; a shoemaker and shoe manufacturer by trade. He led the singing in the Baptist Church, and kept singing schools in Woburn and neighboring towns. "One of the most respected men in town, and liked by all." He was a Mason, and was buried with Masonic honors, with a band of music, - a very unusual thing in those days.

Miss Harriet Richardson and Mr. Samuel Richardson, 3d, both of Wo- burn, were married Dec. 27, 1825. The birth of the child is not on Woburn Record.


(149.) " Mr Ellis Viall of Charlestown died Dec. 14, 1826, Æ. 36 years. " It is not in man that walk- eth to direct his steps : Therefore be ye also ready for at an hour when ye think not, the Son of Man cometh."


Ellis Viall, of Charlestown (see also epitaph 129). The allusion to a sudden death in the epitaph refers to him. for he was killed iu Medford by a wagon loaded with bricks. (Cf. Woburn Journal, Aug. 6, 1870.) He was run over by an ox-wagon loaded with brick, about five o'clock in the morning of the 13th, and died at two o'clock on the morning of Dec. 14, 1826. (Per Johu Swan's Diary, cited in Winchester Record II., 458.)


(151.) " In memory of Silas, son of Mr Simon & Mrs Lucy Barnard, who died March 3, 1827, Et 1 year & 10 mo.


" Sleep on sweet babe from trouble free, Thy parents soon will follow thee."


The Silas Barnard, son of Simon and Lucy, who, according to Woburn Records, was born April 10, 1827, must have been a later son. Simon Barnard and Lucy Simonds, both of Woburn, were married Feb. 12, 1818.


(152.) " In memory of Mr. Nathan Simonds, who died March 16, 1827 Æt 69.


" And now shall thy dust return to the earth, Thy spirit to God who gave it Yet affection shall tenderly cherish thy worth And memory deeply engrave it."


Nathan Simonds, son of Benjamin and Susanna, born Oct. 23, 1757; . married Bathsheba Simonds, widow of Luther. Marriage intention dated March 13, 1795. (See epitaph 310.)


(153.) " In Memory of Mrs. Esther, wife of Mr. David J. Pearson ; who died March 31, 1827 : _ Et. 30.


" Here lies a kind and tender wife Likewise a little infant dove; Encircled in her Mother's arms We trust they'r both in realms above."

Robert Gleason Ames, son of Robert and Sarah (Gleason) Ames. Birth not on Woburn Record. Robert Ames, of Woburn, and Sarah Gleason, of Billerica, were married June 1, 1826.


(155.) "In memory of William C, son of Mr. Luke & Mrs Rhoda Fowle; who died Aug. 21, 1827 : Et. 4 months."

Lieut. William Tay, son of Lieut. William and Susanna; born May 9, 1750. William Tay, 3d, of Woburn, and Hannah Pollard, of Billerica, married July 26, 1771. He was grandson of Lient. William and Abigail (Jones) Tay (epitaph 248, First Yard). Hannah, wife of Lieut. William Tay, died 1829, Et. 80 (epitaph 172).
