(concerning his Mulatto Woman named Dinah & her 2 ch) I, William Rogers, of E Nottingham (MD) late of the county of Chester in Pennsylvania, being sensible that the practice of slave-keeping is contrary to justice & equity, and having been for a considerable time past, desirous to secure freedom to all that are under my care, do hereby make known at this time to all persons whom it may concern, that I do freely, fully and ab- solutely, set free a Mulatto Woman which was brought up in my family, named Dinah, together with her two children whose names are Abigail & Ann; the first of which was three years old the 22nd day of the 6th month

last past, and the youngest was born the 22nd day of the same month in this present year; and I do hereby declare that from and after the date hereof, she is acquitted, discharged from her servitude with her said children: Abigail & Ann, from any further claim as bond servants, either of me, or my heirs, executors or administrators; but that they, the said children are entirely at her disposal; and in consid- eration of her past service to me and in my family, I have allowed and do propose to allow her certain priviledges, of providing bedding and several other necessaries for herself to begin with; & to find her a house to live in, and half an acre of ground for a garden on my land -- rent free for the term of eight years now and ensuing together with the priviledge of fire-wood for her, to be had'off my land where it may suit best; all which I propose as a compensation for the time she has served me since she was eighteen yrs of age; being now about twenty-five years old, & eight months. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, this Nineteenth Day of the Tenth Month in the Year of Our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred & Seventy-Five ..... 1775 (Signed) William Rogers (Seal) Sealed and delivered in the presence of Joshua Brown, Wm Webster & George Churchman (The above is a true copy of the Original entered here this 7th day of the 5th month 1776. ROSS Alexander
& w Katharine (Chambers) were among the charter mbrs of Nottingham MM, 1730. Alexander Ross, a Friend, migrated fr Ireland, and settled within the bounds of Chester MM, PA, late in the 17th Century. In 1706 he m Katharine Chambers, of Chichester, now Delaware County, PA, & in 1713 removed to Haverford, PA, same county. In 1715 he returned to Chester Mtg, and fr thence to New Garden MM, PA, where he lived within the bounds of Nottingham. When Nottingham MM was set off fr New Garden MM, in 1730, he became transferred to the new MM (Nottingham), automatically, because his residence fell within the bounds of the new Nottingham MM. He was an active mbr of Nottingham MM, until 1732, when he made a public sale of his personal property, preparatory to his removal to Virginia, where he and a number of Friends fr Pennsylvania had procured from . the Governor of VA a tract of 100,000 acres of land in the Shenandoah Valley, on which they were to establish some 70 Quaker families. This tract was on the river Opekon; a mtg was established there which was later called Hopewell. (See Hopewell Friends History) The children of Alexander & Katharine (Chambers) Ross were Mary, Lydia, Rebecca, John, George & Albinah. Hopewell

(Note: On p 117, the Clk has interlined that the name Elizabeth Ruff was mistakenly written instead of Mary Ruff; and that there was an Elizabeth Ruff who ack her mou in 1740 & supposed to have been the dt of Michael Webster. Questioned about it, Michael Webster wrote to the MM under date 16-2-1750 saying, "I asked my dt if she was willing to condemn her out- going in marriage, but she, bursting into tears, could give me no answer (as to her husband not being willing); I believe it is a mistake (the matter on which you have asked me) and it was Mary Ruff's husband. RUFF (Cont) Mary
(form Wallis) is rpts 21-11mo (Jan) 1737/8 by Bush River PM as mou to a man named Ruff. On 20-3-1738 Friends rptd that Mary Ruff (alias Wallis) was will- ing to make satisfaction for her mou, but that her husband was not willing.
(Note: on p 117, the Clk has interlined that the name Elizabeth Ruff was mistakenly written instead of Mary Ruff. There was an Elizabeth Ruff who ack her mou in 1740, & supposed to have been the dt of Michael Webster. Questioned about it, Michael Webster wrote to this Mtg, under date 16-2-1750, saying "I asked my daughter if she was willing to condemn her outgoing in marriage, but she, bursting into tears, could give me no answer (as to her husband not being willing). I believe its a mistake, and it was Mary Ruff's husband. From Your Michael Webster, to Nottingham MM." Insert by W.W. Hinshaw.)
rocf Meeting of Friends in Dublin, Ireland, 17-11-1753, dtd 20-3-1753; he req cert to Concord MM, in 1756, but obstructions were found, & after long delay, during which he had not removed said obstructions, he was dis on 18-12-1756.
