I, Benjamin Chandlee, of E Nottingham (MD) late of the County of Chester & province of Pennsylvania (but now below the Province Line), Clock-maker, do make known by these presents unto all people whom it may concern, that a certain Mulatto Child which I have named Peeny, who is at this time nine years old, one month & four days, shall, when she arrives at the age of eighteen years, be free from further service as a bond maid, to either me, my heirs, or executors, administrators or assigns, which will be on the seventh day of the third month in the year of our Lord 1785, & that from & after that time, she shall be released, to have and enjoy her free- dom, to all intents & purposes as fully as a white woman; and I do promise & engage for myself, executors, administrators & assigns, to use reasonable endeavors, to teach & instruct her the said Penny, or to cause her to be taught & instructed in housewifery, according to the custom of the county, & also to learn her to read; & at the expiration of the said term, to give her two suits of apparel, one whereof shall be new; In witness & for the true performance whereof, I have hereunto set my Hand & Seal this 11th Day of the Fourth Month Anno Domini 1776.

This may certify to all whom it may concern, that I did on the 19th of the fifth month, Anno Domini One Thousand Seven Hundred and Seventy Five, set free my negro man, Joe, or Joseph as he calls himself, aged about thirty years, born with John Lewis, near Whiteclay Creek in Newcastle County; and I have given him this certificate in full discharge, to satisfy all persons that he is free from me, my heirs and assigns and all other persons whatsomever, and at liberty to pass about his lawful busi- ness; hath behaved honestly whilst he lived with me in East Nottingham, late of Chester County, Pennsylvania, as witness my hand, this twenty- first day of eleventh month, Anno Domini One Thousand Seven Hundred and Seventy-five.
