TALBOTT John

(Cont)

is complained of 4-10-1755 by Deer Creek PM as: "a mbr of our Society (tho he has not yet produced a cert to this mtg) & James Webster, s of Isaac Webster, have lately been guilty of beating one Richard Ruff in an inhumane manner"; comm apptd; on 15-11-1755 the comm rptd that the sd John Talbott & James Webster were willing to make satisfaction, the person so beaten by them is now dead & therefore, they could not make things right with him; on 17-1-1756, the comm rptd that the two were anxious to make satisfaction, this mtg feels that altho the person abused be dead, they ought to try to become reconciled with his widow; on same date, is the following minute: "John Talbott two mos ago pred fr West River MM, MD, dtd 27-6-1755 for himself & wife, which was read & rec; yet there is no acc of their conversation & conduct therein mentioned; the Clk of this mtg is ordered to write to that mtg"to know whether that was a casual omission or designed." On 21-2-1756 our comm rptd they had accompanied John Talbott & James Webster to visit the widow of Richard Ruff, dec, & "were in a measure reconciled with her, yet the belief that their beating was the occasion in some measure of his death, their endeavors at reconcilation with the widow doth not seem fully to wipe out the imputation of blood; another circumstance of the abuse to sd Ruff's servant man before, appearing now also against them. This mtg feel best to disown them." Both dis 20-3-1756.
