REPORT OF ASHE MISSIONARY BAPTIST PASTOR'S CONFERENCE 1964-65

The genuine description of a minister is to be found in Acts 4:4; "But we sill ve ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word."

Some of the programs have been very interesting and enjoyed by these who tend. They have been mostly open discussion of the Associational work.

The future success of our Association depends largely on the cooperation of e Pastors of the churches.

REPORT ON AMERICAN BIBLE SOCIETY

If the people of the world are to know Christ, the hope of man and nations, they must have the Bible. It is the one primary source of knowledge of Him.

In 1816 the churches established the American Bible Society and charged it with the task of translating, "publishing and distributing the Bible without note or comment and without purpose of profit.

With todays increase in population and the number of unlearned people in the world, the duty of spreading the Word of God has a greater need of the Scriptures in the language of the people.

If the pressing world's need for more translation and distribution of the Bible are to be met, the churches must increase their share of the support of the American Bible Society.

Let us prayerfully consider this in our next years work.

This is the last report that Professor Duncan did prier?

PUBLIC MORALS

Public morals in our nation today are at a distinctly low ebb. Never in our time has there been such flagrant irreverence and disrespect for decent and honorable living. This disrespect and irreverence is seen in our homes, our towns, our streets, and in our churches.

There is something going on in the high school, college, and university campuses that causes a majority of students to draw away from older, established simplistic religious forms.

Perhaps the most significant item on all campuses is an expression and expec- tation of doubt in every faith. The more sensitive student today wants to know how to live a healthy life on earth rather than prepare for one after death.

Sex has permeated literature, T.V., the movies, and even conversation with a range of sordidness, and perversion that is appalling. Our protest against the low level of movies and literature probably would be more effective if the ten million Southern Baptist could be persuaded to boycott them.

Never have our churches been so challenged to stop the wave of low morals in our land.

OUR BAPTIST MEDICAL CENTER THE NEW DAY IN MEDICINE

In this day of rapid change in almost every area of our lives, there are few places in which change has been more rapid than in the field of medicine. In the last wenty-five years we have witnessed 'in medical care a transformation as dramatic as in almost any other area of life.

This period parallels the period of development of our Baptist Medical Center n Winston-Salem. This began in 1941, when our Baptist Hospital and our Baptist

CHRISTIAN HIGHER EDUCATION

The Baptist State Convention of North Carolina supports a unique program of Christian higher education. There are three senior colleges: Campbell, Buie's Creek; Mars Hill, Mars Hill; and Meredith, Raleigh; Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem; and three junior colleges: Chowan, Murfreesbora; Gardner-Webb, Boiling Springs; and Wingate, Wingate.

The Baptist colleges in North Carolina and elsewhere in the Southern Baptist Con- vention continue to train the vast majority of the, church vocational workers. Currently, there is the same concern in our college that is being expressed throughout our Con- vention about the decline in the number of young people answering the call to full- time Christian service. The Christian colleges, through the Council, are currently seeking ways and means of cooperating more fully with local churches in an effort to reverse this trend.

However, the Christian college is not solely in the business of training full-time Christian workers, for the vast majority of students attending a Baptist college will return to their communities as laymen. Sometimes we tend to overlook the vital contribution of lay-leadership trained in our Christian colleges. These men and wo- men return to their communities not only to assume responsibilities in the local church, but to bear a Christian witness through their professions in the communities where they work.

A dream of many years was realized by Wake Forest College and the Baptist State Convention, when on June 12, 1967, Wake Forest College became Wake Forest Uni- versity. Wake Forest University, in addition to law and medicine, is now offering the master's degree and doctor's degree in several areas. Baptist undergraduate colleges throughout the Convention" are rejoicing the prospect of being able to turn to Wake Forest University for much needed teachers with graduate degrees.

The colleges are grateful for the unusual response this year in orders for Christian Education Day materials. It was necessary to have a second printing of some 30,000 pieces of material in order to fill all of the' requests. In 1967, the Christian Education Day offering was $150,000, and we are in hopes that there will be an increase this year. The materials this year were built around the need for challenging more young people, both in the churches and on the college campuses, to consider a church vocation.

Respectfully submitted, F.L. Barker, Jr.

TRAINING UNION REPORT

I am glad to report that more churches in the Ashe Baptist Association are be- coming interested in organizing a Training Union, We now have twelve active Training Unions in the association. Mount Olive Baptist Church and The Phoenix Baptist Church have organized since the association, and the Three Forks Baptist Church will be or- ganized soort. These reports will come in for the next association. As director of Training Union for the association, we will be glad to come to your church and give you an illustrated demonstration of what Training Union is and how it works. Film- strips are available for every phase of the union. In the Training Union you will "study, to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."
