First John 3:1 says, "Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God." What utterly, absolutely, unfailingly amazing love is proved by the sacrifice that God through Christ has made. If we love Jesus be- cause, as the song says, He is "altogether lovely," how infinitely more should we love Him because with our sins He became "al- together ugly!"
PAINTINGS AND MESSAGE BY KEN HUDLER; R.C
27I
I am often asked, "Why have you not painted the resurrec- tion?" No one is more thrilled by the thought of the resurrection than I. (It will be recalled that I have stated my beliefs about two resurrections, in that I believe that Christ died both spiritually and physically.) However, my purpose in these paintings is to empha- size the cost that our Lord was willing to pay because of His love for lost humanity. For this reason, I choose to build the climax of this presentation around the costly sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ.
How grateful we who have accepted and trusted in this sacri- fice should be that "by His stripes we are healed"-and may we realize that we are more greatly healed by the stripes which smote His soul. Yet, there is one aspect of healing which I pray will never be ours. May healing never come to our consciences. May our con- sciences become and remain as tender and sensitive as a wound. May we nevermore "hide our faces from Him." May we be done forever with the shallow sentimentality which bids us consider our Lord's death in terms of only physical torture.
It is my conviction that to try to comprehend the sufferings of Christ in terms of only physical agony is like trying to understand a Rembrandt masterpiece by studying the frame and ignoring the painting. It is like expecting that one can travel to outer space and yet keep one foot upon the launching pad.
Whether or not we face this fact, this "Man of Sorrows" is the one "with whom we have to do." How have you responded, and how will you respond to Him? If you have not accepted Him as your Saviour and the Lord of your life, I implore you to no longer "hide your face from Him."
If you have had an experience in which you received Christ into your heart, give Him every square-inch of your heart. He has the well-earned right to require of you the difficult, the sacrificial, the hard-to-bear. It is to the shame of humanity when we again acquaint Him with grief by our disobedience.

COMMENTS
I have been deeply impressed with the ability and dedication of Mr. Ken Hudler, author of "The Man of Sorrows." This program is presented in a fresh and dynamic way and is decidedly different and spiritually challenging. Any person sharing in a worship ex- perience where this message is presented and the paintings pre- sented, will go away with a greater appreciation of the gift that was given and the price that was paid for our salvation. I am pleased to commend Mr. Hudler to any church that requests his ministry.
Dr. Roy D. Gresham, Executive Secretary-Treasurer Baptist Convention of Maryland
I recommend Ken Hudler's mature and eloquent ministry on the basis that:
I have had him at one of my major area-wide crusades. Over 1500 people were properly shaken toward the reality of Christ as Ken presented "The Man of Sorrows." Ministers of all denominations want his universal ministry to return.
This ministry is versatile. The paintings were also on dis- play in the lobby of the New Kensington, Pa., Holiday Inn. People viewed them with renewed reverence.
Ken Hudler is a Christian gentleman primarily concerned with investing his special gift for the glory of Christ. He is indisputably sound, both theologically and doctrinally.
Evangelist Ron Susek Crusade Evangelism

Ken Hudler has developed a unique and effective presenta- tion on the sufferings of Christ. His realistic, full-color oil interpre- tations of many major crises in the ministry and death of our Lord are unlike any others I have seen. Ken, an informed and able speaker, interlaces the presentation of each picture with lucid comment.
When I asked him what he hoped to accomplish through this ministry, he replied, "To awaken a response to the 'awful cost' paid by our Lord."
Ken's ministry is worthy of a wide use. I recommend him as a speaker at any occasion.
Vander Warner, Jr., Pastor-Evangelist
It was my privilege to hear and see Ken Hudler as he spoke to the church of which I am a member. During this evening Worship Hour, he challenged our people to the very depths by portraying in the form of Christian art the matchless sufferings of our Saviour on the Cross. He did not use the normal paintings of Christ, but tried to show more of His sorrow, His suffering, His manliness, and to let us know that He is our substitute in taking our place on the Cross and suffering for us. I heartily commend Mr. Hudler, his paintings, and his preaching to any who wish him to fill any of our pulpits. He is truly a lay-Christian of the highest order, and will be a rich blessing to you and to your church. It is my prayer that God may continue to use this man of God, who has so many talents for Him in portraying in a new way, in the form of art, the suffering Saviour.

IRA THOMAS JOHNSTON 1892 - 1971
Ira Thomas Johnston, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Johnston of the Idlewild-Blue Ridge Communities, rendered a distinct service to the cause of our Master for many years here in Ashe County. Aside from the sacred relationship he had with his companion of the years and their son, he rendered service to our people in two distinct areas of life: the political and religious. In this tribute to his memory I shall speak only of the reli- gious contribution he made through the church in which he held his mem- bership, in the Ashe Baptist Association and through the Bapist Sate Con- vention of North Carolina.
Early in his life he made his personal commitment to Jesus Christ as nis Lord and united with the Old Fields Baptist Church. But his spiritual pilgrimage was to lead him to transfer his membership to the old Jefferson Baptist Church and from there to the First Baptist Church, West Jefferson, where he rendered a distinct service as long-time teacher of the Men's Bible Class; only illness or absence from the community could keep him from his appointed post of duty. Furthermore, he set the proper example for Sunday School teachers by remaining for the Worship hour; no pastor ever had a more loyal nor faithful supporter than he.
Brother Johnston rendered a distinct service to the Ashe Baptist Asso- ciation through he years. He was a delegate from his church almost every year and participated in the deliberations of the association with sympathy for its work and concern for its progress. He served on many of its com- mittees, most notably its Executive Committee of which he was Chairman for many years. He also served as a member of the General Board of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina for several terms. Yet, Brother Johnston was never narrow nor provincial in his Christian commitment, for his sense of Christian Brotherhood knew no denominational labels.
How did he live? As all great men have lived before him, as we live and as all who please God will live after him; he lived by faith and trust in our Lord Jesus Christ, a faith reflected in his favorite hymn, "The Un- clouded Day." -R. R. C.

MRS. MATTIE G. PARSONS 1906 - 1972
Mrs. Mattie Goodman Parsons, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jethro Goodman and wife of Ralph C. Parsons spent her formative years in the community served by the Bethel Baptist Church. In early life she professed faith in Jesus Christ as her Savior and Lord and united with the Bethel Church; in later years she moved her membership to the First Baptist Church, West Jefferson.
Mrs. Parsons was educated in the local schools of Ashe County until time for High School. She was then enrolled in the Oak Hill Academy, Mouth of Wilson, Va., a Baptist school supported for many years by the Ashe Baptist Association (N. C.) and the New River Baptist Association (Va.), and founded by the late J. Floyd Fletcher, for whom the Fletcher Memorial Church, Jefferson, is named. Her education was continued at Appalachian State University from which she earned her A. B. Degree.
Mrs. Parsons is remembered by us for her work as a homemaker, as a teacher in the public schools, as a worker in the Mental Health movement, and in the local church and association. She is remembered affectionately as "Miss Mattie" by many of our citizens who attended her classes as chil- dren. In her local church she was faithful both in her service and her means, and in the association she served as Woman's Missionary Union Superinten- dent for many years and as a member of many committees in the asso- ciation through the years, she requested that at her death memorials be made to the Ashe Baptist Camp in lieu of floral tribues.
The divine writer said, "Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee the crown of life." Behold, how well she wears the diadem that is hers today! -R. R. C.

DARIUS C. SEVERT 1890 - 1971
Darius C. Severt, for more than 40 years Training Union Director of the Ashe Missionary Baptist Association - a record, perhaps, unmatched in the entire Southern Baptist Convention.
Darius C. Severt was a native of Ashe County, and a member of one of its outstanding families. He was born in the Obids Community and at- tended the schools that were available at that time, later attending what is now Appalachian State University, Boone, where he prepared himself for the vocation of teaching school. He was married twice; first to Miss Maude Icenour of the King's Creek section of Caldwell County; to this union one daughter, Mrs. Robert Williams of Chatham, Virginia, was born. Follow- ing the death of Mrs. Severt he was then married to Miss Catherine Far- rington, who survives him.
Mr. Severt served our Lord in the local church and on the associational level. He made it a point to attend the church in the community where he was living, even when away from his home church and community be- cause of work. In the local church he served as committee member, as a Sunday School Teacher, and, most of all, in his beloved Training Union.
We are concerned here with his work in the Ashe Baptist Association, where he served on numerous committees, including the Executive Com- mittee, as Clerk and Treasurer, and as Training Union Director. His years of service in the last named office spanned the formative years of the or- ganization, both in the convention and on the local level, and during many of those years he did well to keep the organization alive. He, along with Miss Dare Teague who was Associational Missionary at the time, had the privilege of leading the Associational Training Union Organization to a Standard rating in the Convention. When asked how it was done, he replied with characteristic and becoming modesty, "We just looked around and saw what needed doing and did it."
He entered into his eternal reward on December 31, 1971. Surely the words of our Lord are for Him, "Enter into the joys of thy Lord."

MUSIC DIRECTOR'S REPORT
In July of 1971 a county choir, made up of members of about twelve different churches provided special music for the associational revival held at Jefferson Elementary School gymnasium. A youth choir also parti- cipated. It was felt that this endeavor was of greeat value in helping the different churches come closer together.
A music school was not held this year due to the heavy schedule of Dr. Perrin. However, members from various churches began meeting in April to prepare for the second associational revival held at Northwest High School.
A total of approximately fifty persons made up the choir under the direction of Mr. Dewey Campbell." The choir did an excellent job of providing inspiring music, with the aid of special groups and a youth choir.
I wish to thank all those who have participated in our efforts as an associational choir, both those that sang and those that accompanied them. It is my sincere wish that we continue such efforts in order that we might be brought closer together in our association. May all we do be through the will of God and to His honor and glory.
Repsectfully submitted, Maureen S. Blackburn Associational Music Director
