We were also successful in our week end meeting that was conduct- ed in May. In this meeting we had a number of speakers from outside the Association to come and speak in our churches, on the subject of stewardship, church finances, and the budget system. This meeting was of much interest to all who attended, and we believe that much good will come of this meeting.
The officers serving in the Ministerial Association next year will be Rev. G. C. Burkett, Moderator, Rev. W. E. Burchette, Vice Moderator, and R. C. Ashley, Secretary.
Respectfully submitted,
R. C. Ashley, Secretary

Associational Leadership Clinic
Christ and His redemptive purpose.
ASSISTANCE IS GIVEN to leaders in the associations in the preparation for and in the conduct of BAPTIST JUBILEE REVIVALS. "A BAPTIST JUBILEE RE- VIVAL is an associational evangelistic emphasis for Southern Baptists for 1961, 1962, 1963, and 1964. It differs from other revivals in that it is a distinctive, clear- ly defined evangelistic program for an association and the churches in the associ- ation."
SPECIAL ATTENTION is given to reclaiming the inactive church members for the cause of Christ and to the spiritual nurture of all Christians.
As an integral part of the overall objectives of the Division of Evangelism, the special work in the area of personal evangelism seeks to translate the "mass hearing" to the "personal doing" on the part of individual men, women, boys and girls. It is essentially a person-to-person relationship.
Believing that "other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ" (I Cor. 3:11), personal evangelism seeks to build with very definite stones on this Great Foundation. The first stone is that personal evangelism must always accompany the preaching of the Gospel. Another stone is that very little spiritual growth can take place in the life of any Christian unless he is actively en- gaged in sharing his Saviour with others. A third stone is that "Go ye and make

Fruits of Evangelism: Baptism of Believers
disciples" is a pattern, and must, of a necessity, include the two ideas of leading a person to Christ and then giving him personal attention until he is truly a disciple or follower of Christ.
In the work of implementing the above concept, the task of personal evange- lism in our Convention is to go where the people are to give personal on-the-job training. We seek to join hands with our Baptist pastors to use every resource at our command under the leadership of the Holy Spirit, to help every Baptist in North" Carolina to become an effective witness for Christ.
Division of Missions
E. L. SPIVEY, Director
The function of the Director of this Division and the purpose of the Convention's mission program is best de- scribed in the analysis of the work by the committee of twenty-five which reported at the special session in 1959. It described this division's function as follows:
To survey and aid in the establishment of new mis- sion points and new churches in North Carolina. This may involve the establishment of a loan fund and the training of leaders for this task. The 30,000 movement will be a vital part of this ministry through 1964.
Work with the Department of Church Development in studying and carrying out plans for the development of new and underdeveloped churches in the Convention.
Work with the associational missionaries in the task of strengthening the district association as a vital unit of our Baptist work. Special attention should be given to the development of literature, methods and suggestions that may be valuable to the missionary and officers of the associations.
E. L. Spivey
Work with the director of Fruitland Bible Institute in the accomplishment of its purpose to help men who have been called to the ministry later in life or who, because of family or other responsibilities, have not been able to attend our regular Baptist colleges and seminaries.
Work with those who are seeking to minister to special groups such as:
The deaf people.
The correctional institutions and other institutions that may need chaplaincy service, such as Samarcand Industrial School for Girls and McCain Sanitorium.
Other institutions or special groups.
Work with the Department of Interracial Cooperation in creating good will and rendering possible help to our racial groups.
Participate in conferences, rallies and various district and State programs to inform and encourage our people in their support of our total Baptist work and in the conduct and promotion of schools of missions and schools for pastors.
The continuing story of the interpretation of these ministries and the identifi- cation of those who direct them will enable North Carolina Baptist to understand the scope and purpose of their Division of Missions.

Before I start on the next pages, I would like to say a few words about those who did help so much in the money part of the Midway Baptist Church. There was above $3,000.00 came from the members of The First Baptist Church of West Jefferson, N.C.
Among these givers was M.D.Mulles. H.R. Vannoy. Carl Colvard. Wade Vannoy Sr. and George H.McGuire. and others I cannot just recall. I as a minister must stop to thank all these givers. When building the Friendly Grove Baptist Church, it was West Jefferson, Baptist Church who gave us a carload of brick shiped in from Kingsport Tenn. For us to brick our church with. And Bob. Jackson gave $100.00 on this load of brick. It was David Harless who lead the movement on getting us this brick. Dave, said to them "we are not in a building program here at First Church, Lets help this church.

MIDWAY BAPTIST CHURCH 1953
The Midway Baptist Church started in the above tenant house that was vacant. Just across from where the church now stand. A prayer meeting was first started, and then a Sunday School, was started with attendence of 75 to 90 in both prayer service and Sunday School. Loyd Witherspoon owner of the house, let us have the property rent free; and gave full cooperation to the work of the new mission.
The Young Married Peoples Sunday School class met under an Locust Tree all summer and fall, was never interupted a single Sun- day by rain. The class was taught by ,Zola Richerdson now Mrs. Carl Massey. Zola and Mr. & Mrs W.M.Blackburn Members of the Friendly Grove Baptist Church gave their full entire service in the work and constru- ction. The work was organized with 35 members from a number of churches with letters from those churches constituing the MIDWAY BAPTIST CHURCH.
Much credit is to go, to Mr.Jones and Edna McNeil for providing the church with its present location. Jones has since gone
I06
to his reward, and this will be a lasting memorial to his and Edna's memory.
After we had secured the land, Mr.M.D. Mulles was chosen to be construction leader, and a good job he did, this first unit was built with free labour, and so many people had a part in this work. Mr. Will Mulles is ever to be remembered for furnishing his Truck in hawling supplies, tons upon tons of rock sand and other materials.
Earl Ball. Quincy Dixon, Glenn McNiel Paul Phillips and others helped us to make the core of the working force, with so many helping. The ladies of the church and comm- unity brought out a big dinner the day we poured the Basement that will never be forg- otten. It was a great experience to see this new church grow and flourish.
Even the growing pains gave us all the belley ache, even my self as pastor. But as the maturity of a child growes to adult hood they get over the belley ache. I presume that we all have gotten well of these growing pains. I have been back for a revival, which was the joy of my life.
In the next picture will show the first unite complete, at the time I left and went to Maryland, this was the church, with the walls for the new educational building having been poured. Since that time the new educat- ional building had been erected, and the front has been reworked and the steeple built.
A pretty young woman stepped into a music shop in the city the other day. She tripped up to the counter where a new clerk was assorting music and in her sweetest tones asked: "Have you 'Kissed Me in the Moonlight'? "
The clerk turned, looked, and said: "It must have been Ira Jones at the other counter. I've only been here a week."
When we opened the new work at the Mid- way Church, it was said where are you going to get your leaders? We found that the woods was full of marvelous tallent. Siners to beat the mocking birds, John Pierce called on Howard Jones to lead the singing, scared him so, his face litup red as if his wife had told him to go jump in the lake.
Howard, took hold as a singing leader, and today is one among the best choir leaders in the Association. John Pierce, a father of 12 children made one among the best Supt, of Sunday School till his death which hurt us all so deep. John Pierce. Earl Ball. Q.N. Dickson. and Brint Witherspoon, were the first four people to loose by death, that the church needed so badly. Brint Witherspoon was^natural born musican, she could get more music out of a piano to her age than any one I have ever known.
Her picture appears on a full page in this book in appreciation of our love, Nora and my self as we knew her. And I have a sneaking suspecion that Brint and Nora, is singing together at this time.
THE MIDWAY BAPTIST CHURCH At this time is a full time church. With a full time program, Lead by Rev.Fred Troutman Pastor, with a full and able church leadership. Where will you get your leaders? Where did they come from? From among the fellowship. Look at the young people that have grown up in this fellowship since 1953. Making such marvelous success in College's all over the country. Where did these children come from? Succesful in busin- ess in most every walk of life.
Long live Midway Baptist Church and its fine children for manny years to come.
A Women's Lib leader, speaking to a women's club audience interspersed with a few male guests, declared that women soldiers will soon be the order of the day. "Who," she asked, "can defeat a well-trained, well-equipped army of women?"
A male voice shouted from the back of the auditorium. "One mouse?"

BRENT WITHERSPOON
Beaver Creek Student Dies Of Cancer
Special to The Journal
WEST JEFFERSON, March 12- Evelyn Brent Witherspoon, popular member of the senior class of Beaver Creek High School, died of cancer Sunday night at the age of 16.
1
Her condition had been serious for the past several months and she had been a patient in Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem, for much of that time.
Six weeks ago she was returned here to the home of her parents, Lloyd and Verona Witherspoon. after further hospitalization ap- peared hopeless. She died still with- out knowing the cause of lier ill- ness.
Before she became ill she was active in the Glee Club, Sports Club, 4-H Club, Tri-Hi-Y, Future Homemakers of America and the Business Club.
In addition to her school activi- ties, she also took a deep interest in her church, Midway Baptist, near West Jefferson, which she had served as pianist for the past three years.
"She was one of the most devout young Christians I've ever worked with," said her pastor, the Rev. M. D. Hart. "Music was her hobby, and she put her heart and soul into the music of the church."
Brent, as she was popularly known, is survived by her parents, a brother, Dean, and a sister, Judy; her paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Witherspoon of Jefferson, and her maternal i grandmother, Mrs. David W. Miller of Warrensville.
Funeral services will be held at Midway Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Tuesday, conducted by the Rev. M. D. Hart and the Rev. Dewey Roten.
Classmates of Beaver Creek High School will attend in a body, with the girls acting as flower bearers. Burial will be in Friendship Cemetery.
"And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together, and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost and they spake the word of God with boldness. And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection. (Acts 4:31, 33.)
