CHURCH COVENANT

Having been led ası we believe, by the Spirit of God, to re- ceive the Lord Jesus Christ as our Saviour, and on profession of our faith. having been baptised in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, we do now, in the presence of God, angels and this assembly, most solemnly and joyfully enter into this covenant with one another, as one body in Christ.

We engage, therefore by the aid of the Holy Spirit, to walk tog ther in Christian love; to strive for the advancement of this church, in knowledge, holiness and comfort; to promote its prosperity and spirituality; to sustain its worship, ordin- ances, discipline and doctrines; to contribute cheerfully and regularly to the support of the ministry, the expenses of the church and the relief of the poor, and the spread of the Gos- pel through all nations.

We also engage to maintain family and secret devotions; to religiously educate our children; to seek the salvation of our kindred and acquaintances; to walk circumspectly in the world; to be just in our dealing, faithful in our engagements, and exemplary in our deportment; to avoid all tattling, back- biting and excessive anger; to abstain from the sale and use of intoxicating drinks as a beverage, and to be zealous in our ef- forts to advance the kingdom of our Saviour.

We further „ngage to watch over one another in brotherly love; to remember each other in prayer; to aid each other in sickness and distress; to cultivate Christian sympathy in feel- Ing and courtesy in speech; to be slow to take offense, but al- ways ready for reconciliation, and mindful of the rule of our Saviour to secure it without delay.

We moreover engage that when we remove from this place we will, as soon as possible, unite with some other church, where we can carry out the spirit of this covenant and the principals of God's Word.

REPORT OF THE ASHE MINISTERIAL ASSOCIATION .

The Ashe Ministerial Association has met regularly, each fifth Saturday in conference for the past year, with good at- tendance and well - planned programs. We feel that progress is being made in the Association.

The regular school for preachers was conducted this year at the West Jefferson church. The school was a great success with Dr. J. R. Mosley, of Macon, Ga .; Dr. Howard Ford and Rev.J. C .Pipes as teachers. The attendance of this school was among the best we have yet experienced.

We look forward to the coming year for another school.

This conference has done much to promote the buliding of . the new wing to the hospital and the moving of Wake Forest College to Winston - Salem.

We look forward to another successful year with more preachers being added to the conference and more ministers placed in the pastoral work.

The Executive Board of the Association has met regularly with the conference, and added much to its success.

At the last meeting Rev. H. M. Wnkler was re-elected as Moderator and R. C. Ashley as secretary, for the coming year. Respectfully submitted, R. C. Ashley.

Obituary HOWARD PAUL HART

Howard Paul Hart, son of Rev. and Mrs. M. D. Hart, was born November 22, 1928. Died March 17, 1950. His age being 21 years, 3 months and 25 days.

He leaves his parents, one sister, Mrs. Austin Spencer, of Stungills, N. C., three brothers: Garland, Junior and Carroll, all of the home in West Jefferson. Also a large number of friends, schoolmates and relatives.

Paul professed faith in Christ and was baptised into the fel- lowship of Tuckerdale Baptist church, July 23, 1947. He later moved his membership to the Friendly Grove Baptist church where he became an ac- tive member. He was active in the Training Union and other or- ganizations of the church. Paul remained a faithful and loyal member until his death. His un- timely going came as a surprise and a shock to the family and his many friends.

Even though Paul's physical body has ceased to function, he is not dead to his family, friends, and schoolmates; because his in- fluence will live always in the home, in the church, in the school and in the community as a shining example of a good son, a loving brother, a spiritual per- sonage, and a good citizen.

Wherever duty called Paul met it nobly. He was fully pre- pared for another state of exis- tence. His reward will be one for a life well spent on earth.

36

REMARKS CONCERNING THE SCHOOL ACTIVITIES OF PAUL HART. By Robert Davis, Principal West Jefferson High School

Paul came to West Jefferson school as a transfer student from Lansing. We welcomed him, but had little thought at the time that he would soon become per- haps our most valuable student. However, it was not long before his good personality, clean hab- its, worthwhile ambitions, spirit of cooperation, his desire to help himself and to share with others. his honesty, good judgment and self - reliance became a working part of the school.

Paul received honors during his junior year, but it was during his senior year that he truly came into his own. Some of the extra -curricular activities in which he participated were: Jun- ior year - Member boy's bas- ketball team and president of junior class.

His time was well filled dur- ing this, his senior year. In ad- dition to a regular academic load he was selected as a sports reporter for the school paper; was a member of the advertising staff of the paper; appointed man- ager of boys' basketball team; elected business manager of the school yearbook; elected presi- dent of the senior class; elected president of the student council.

Paul was popular with both boys and girls. His teachers felt honored to have him in class. He merited the confidence and re- spect which he had from all students and the faculty. Paul liked and respected both students and faculty. They, in turn, liked and respected him.

We cannot describe Paul's school life and activities better than to say "he was a gentle- man."
