church member training. This is designed to help meet the needs of cvery church member and his children.

There are 13 organized Church Training organizations in our associa- tion. We recommend that each Church Training Director study carefully the New Program outlined for the 70's.

New Features

Church training in the 70's will be flexible and varied in order to mee needs of individuals and groups. It will continue to help church member gain knowledge, understandings, and skills needed in fulfilling the church's mission.

-The new grouping-grading plan

-A correlated cirriculum for all ages, carried in materials with fresh, more attractive formats

-Increased emphasis on short-term training and interest grouping

-A wider selection of elective training courses designed to meet specific training needs

-More emphasis on self-instruction as a training approach

-Emphasis on scheduling training for certain groups at times in addition to Sunday evening

-Flexibility of organization

-An improved general achievement guide and age-division achievement guides

While all church members are recognized as the primary constituency of the training program, distinctive needs of new church members and church leaders will be met through approaches and materials designed especially for them. In addition, the training program will provide for Preschoolers and Children (ages birth through eleven) foundational learn ing experiences. The tasks of the church training program of the 70's are

1. Orient new church members

2. Train church members to perform the functions of the church

3. Train church leaders

4. Teach Christian theology, Christian ethics, Christian history, and church policy and organization

5. Provide and interpret information regarding the work of the church and denomination.

Church Member Training

In church member training, there will be increased emphasis on deter- mining training needs - both church and individual - and upon meeting these needs. Procedures will be suggested to help church members analyze their own training needs and select appropriate training.

Organization and curriculum materials for church member training will reflect the new grouping-grading plan. There will be three leadership periodicals and three corresponding member periodicals for each divisior except Preschool. In the Preschool division, there will be three leadership periodicals and two periodicals for parents.

Respectfully submitted, Rev. E. W. Powers, Associational Church Training Director

REV. HARRISON M. WINKLER 1888 - 1970

Rev. Harrison M. Winkler, a native of Wilkes County, was ordained to the Gospel Ministry by the Fairplains Baptist Church in 1921, and shortly thereafter came to Ashe County where he served practically all of his active ministry. He served many of our churches as pastor and con- ducted revivals in many others; he was in great demand both as a pastor and evangelist.

Bro. Winkler was an able man in the pulpit, possessing a mind that organized his material in a logical and easily remembered outline and having a native eloquence that held the attention of his hearers. He was deeply concerned about the temptations that appeal so strongly to young people and warned them against being deceived by them. In the Ashe Association, in addition to the service he rendered in various offices, he is remembered particularly for his reports on Temperance and Public Morals. He was an uncompromising foe of beverage alcohol in any form.

Bro. Winkler was held in high esteem by his fellow ministers, as was evidenced by the presence of so many of them at his funeral. To Mrs. Winkler and the children we extend our sympathy and affection and com- mend them to the care and comfort of the Holy Spirit - even the Spirit of our Lord Jesus Christ.

IN DEDICATION

REVEREND W. E. DENNY

For several years it has been the fine and commendable custom of our sociation to dedicate the Minutes of each session to some of our brethern o have served wonderfully and well and who are no longer with us. is is a departure to an extent in that the Minutes of this session of the sociation of 1971 are, by the wish and will of the Association, dedicated Reverend W. E. Denny, a man who is still with us, and this dedication made in grateful recognition of what he has meant to the Association d to the Baptist cause in Ashe County for more than half a century. For elve years he was the Moderator of the Association. For more years an that he has been the most influential member of that body and the ptists of the Association have relied upon his judgment and followed leadership. At the 1971 session, he preached the Associational Sermon, ich many have proclaimed the best of all the wonderful sermons he has livered through the years. It was a clarion call for our Baptist people perform their mission for the cause of the Master in the churches, in the sociation, and around the world. He deserves an accolade while he lives d, therefore, this dedication is made and there goes with it the devout sire that he may continue to be blessed and be a guiding star on the rizon of the Baptist cause in the Ashe Association for ycars to come.

are forced to continue receiving financial assistance from the State Con- vention in order to operate.

Rev. Carl Witherspoon was appointed to fill the vacancy on the Execu- tive Committee left by the resignation of Rev. Ray Shumate.

I wish to express my appreciation to the committee members who have been so faithful and concerned about the Associational work during the past three years that I have served with this committee. I ask that you continue your support to this committee that they may be able to carry on the Associational business between sessions.

Let us make the coming year a Get Involved year. All committees should be active. Regular meeting times should be scheduled so that you will be informed and kept up to date on affairs pertaining to the Associa- tion. If you know of any business which needs the attention of the Execu- tive Committee, feel free to call any member, or meet with them on the third Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the Associational Parsonage. Your comments and suggestions would be appreciated and helpful. I am sure that the members of this committee would be glad to meet with your com- mittee at any time you feel it necessary or beneficial.

GET INVOLVED - let's make this the best Associational year yet.

Respectfully submitted, William F. Scott, Chairman

HOMES FOR THE AGING

Our North Carolina Baptist Homes For The Aging celebrated their 20th anniversary in March of this year. During these twenty years, quite a host of aging people have found a haven of rest and happiness in the homes that Christian people, with their faith in God and their gifts dedicated to, Him, have built and provided for this ministry to the aging, and we feel sure that God has been pleased and still is, when we see how this ministry has grown from two modest homes to five homes, with a wonderful nursing care unit at Hayes Home that will care for 76 bed patients. 160 residents also are given loving care and cheer in the homes.

May the churches of the Ashe Baptist Association come forward and honor our Lord and Master with a worthy offering to this great cause, and help to brighten the last days, weeks, or perhaps years of fathers and mothers who are facing the sunset of this troublesome life.

May we follow the example of the boy who gave his loaves and small fishes into the hands of the Master and let Him multiply and divide it among the many thousands who are looking to us for help.

"Cast me not off in time of old age: forsake me not when my strength faileth." Psalm 71:9

MUSIC DIRECTOR'S REPORT

In February, 1971, a Song Festival was to have been held at West Jef- ferson Baptist Church. This meeting was to have included choirs from other parts of the state as well as the county choirs. However, there was not enough interest shown to merit having it.

In July, 1971, Dr. Perrin from Gardner-Webb conducted another music school. This school concentrated on preparation of music for the coming Associational Revival. Both adult and youth groups were large in number. The school was a great success.

The Music Director, with an accompanist, went to one church to aid them in their music. It is hoped that other churches would seek to enrich their music programs. Through music we can speak in a special way. Be in prayer that God will continue to guide us in our work, and that all we do might be to the glory of God.

Respectfully submitted, Mrs. Maureen Blackburn Associational Music Director
