1974 BIBLICAL RECORDER REPORT TO THE ASSOCIATIONS

The BIBLICAL RECORDER is grateful for another good year, although these are difficult days for religious publications. Some have had to go out of business while others are squeezed by rising costs. The RECORDER has not escaped the pressures of inflation. For example, paper has risen 61 per cent already this year-and the end is not in sight.

Even so, the RECORDER has been in business for 141 years and expects to continue. A few changes have to be made, however, to keep the paper strong. As staff members have resigned or retired, they have not been replaced. Some weeks the number of pages has to be reduced to save money, but readers have been very understanding.

Despite some problems, the RECORDER is enjoying its highest circulation in history-more than 111,000-thanks to the continuing support of the vast majority of Baptist churches in the state. These churches and their members remember the part the RECORDER played in the overwhelming defeat of liquor- by-the-drink last November. This is probably the most significant story that the RECORDER has reported since the associations met last year. You will remember that approximately 70 per cent of the voters in the state voted against liquor-by- the-drink and it was defeated in 97 of 100 counties. This should take care of this issue for awhile.

The RECORDER will continue its emphasis on local church coverage, seeking to deal with problems that every church has. Naturally, we are prejudiced, but we do not believe any publication can take the place of the BIBLICAL RECORD- ER. If your church does not send it to every member, may we ask a simple ques- tion: Why? At a cost of only a nickel a week for each family, this is the best investment a Baptist Church can make. Put the RECORDER in the budget before it has to increase the rate because of inflation.

Respectfully submitted, J. Marse Grant, Editor BIBLICAL RECORDER

REPORT OF THE COUNCIL ON CHRISTIAN LIFE AND PUBLIC AFFAIRS

The basic work of the Christian Life Council continues to be that of a re- source; research and referral agency for North Carolina Baptist. The Council responds to daily inquiries from churches and individuals seeking to discover Christian insights for every day living.

The Council conducted a workshop last March entitled "Helping Churches Help Families". Over 1200 attended part or all of that workshop.

A series of political action seminars are scheduled for September 30 - October 2. These seminars are designed to help Baptist know sow to apply their Christian faith to various levels of government.

The Council distributes free upon request a series of 21 tracts on the family to North Carolina Baptist Churches.

The Council on Christian Life and Public Affairs consists of 16 persons who 3 give guidance to the full-time director, Dr. Charles V. Petty.

PASTOR'S CONFERENCE REPORT

The Ashe Baptist Pastor's Conference has made a great change in the past year due to the leadership of the Holy Spirit and the good attendance by the pastors. We have averaged around fourteen pastors being present at our meetings this year. Our monthly conferences have come to the place that they are em- powered by the presence of the Holy Spirit as the word of God is preached, and as intercessory prayer is made for each other and for each others churches.

Reverend Kenneth Ridings (Teacher at Fruitland Baptist Bible Institute) spoke to our pastors at one session and pastors from our churches in our associa- tion have brought inspiring messages at the other meetings.

We are looking forward to the new year with great expectancy. It is our desire that all of our Southern Baptist Brethren will join us once a month to praise our Saviour, proclaim His word, purchase His power by penitance and prayer that we may all be empowered men of God.

Respectfully submitted,

Tommy Johnson, Chairman Pastor's Conference

AMERICAN BIBLE SOCIETY

The world's population reached an estimated total of four billion people in 1974 - most of them without ready access to the Word of God. These people constitute the challenge confronting the churches, dedicated to the proclaiming of the Gospel, and the Bible Societies, dedicated to the translation, publication and distribution of God's Word.

The publication of the Word of God requires technical skill, scholarly exper- tise, and selfless devotion to the communication of the sacred text. The Bible Societies of the world have assumed this task, providing Scriptures in whatever languages, formats and varieties that are required. The task is enormous. The number of Bibles, Testaments, Portions and Selections distributed annually throughout the world exceeds 250,000,000.

During 1974, 252,956,174 Scriptures were distributed throughout the world by the United Bible Societies. Of these, 87,102,185 were distributed in the United States. The subsidy required to make distribution programs possible came from the United Bible Societies' World Service Budget of $11,000,000. Half of this amount is underwritten by the American Bible Society through contributions from dedicated individuals and churches.

In June, 1974, the American Bible Society announced a special program called "GOOD NEWS AMERICA". The program is designed to bring a part of God's Word to every man, woman and child in the U. S. A. during the bicentennial celebration.

The challenge of hundreds of millions of people hungry for God's Word con- fronts the Southern Baptist Convention and the American Bible Society with unprecedented responsibilities and opportunities. Working together, we can be faithful to the high calling to which we are committed.

Respectfully submitted, Rev. Bruce South

BROTHERHOOD REPORT

This has been a very good year for our Brotherhood organizations in the different churches. Several churches have very active groups. These men's groups also help and work with the Royal Ambassadors.

Our annual Brotherhood Workshop was well attended. Brother Edd Bullock of the State Brotherhood Commission led the workshop. Some of the activities this past year were the RA DAY FOOTBALL GAMES at the Baptist colleges. Several groups attended the meeting and the football game at Wake Forest. Brotherhood and RA groups also hold camp-outs at our Baptist Summer Camp.

It is our sincere wish that other churches of our association would see the advantages of organizing groups within their church. Groups of men enjoy fellow- ship while working on church buildings and grounds, conducting church census and visitation programs.
