9. JAMES BARNES MORRISON, son of Z. Nowell, b. in Haverhill, Mass., Nov. 2, 1849. unm. He was educated in the Haverhill, Mass., schools, and commenced the study of theology in 1875, in the Mead- ville Theological School, from which he grad. in 1877, and was ordained in Haverhill, Mass., the same year. He was located as a Unitarian minister in Nantucket, Mass., from 1877 to 1880; Lancaster, 1880 to 1890, supplying the Unitarian church of L. from 1881 to 1888 ; Laconia, 1890, until he d., Sept. 22, 1896. Under his administration in L. the Unitarian church was erected, in 1884, and the society organized and placed upon a substantial basis for effective denominational work. A. F. and A. M. K. T.
MORSE.
The name was originally De Mors, which was changed to Mors. Morce is an ancient name of Norman origin, and was changed to Moss. Godefridus de la Morse of Normandy held a fief from Philip Augustus of the honour of Malherbe. (Norman People, p. 338.) The coat-of- arms of Hugo de Mors, 1358, was 500 years old at the time of Edward. The motto is, " In God, not arms, Trust." (Memorial of the family of Morse, for Hon. 1. THOMAS MOULTON, b. in England, was in Newbury, Mass., 1637. The following year he settled in Hampton, N. H., and is the common ancestor of a numerous family. The name of his wife was Martha.
2. JOHN MOULTON, son of Thomas 1, b. in England, with wife Anne came to New England, 1637, probably in company with his father. He settled in Hampton, N. H., and was the first deputy or representative from that town to the General Court. He d. 1649 or 1650. His widow d. April 12, 1668.
