In 1872 he moved to Boston, Mass., and soon became noted for his work, especially ideal heads of children, which became very pop- ular. In 1877 he went to Europe and studied in Paris under Lefebvre and Boulanger from 1877 to 84, spending his summers in Holland, Bel- gium, and Spain sketching ; he exhibited pictures in the salons of 1881- 2-3. His first salon picture, " Les Deux Amis," was subsequently pub- Jished by him as an etching. On returning to this country he reopened his studio in Boston, and has done much notable work in portraits and genre subjects. Among his more noted portraits are : Gen. N. P. Banks, in the City Hall, Waltham, Mass. ; Gov. John B. Smith, Gov. Hiram A. Tuttle, Hon. E. H. Rollins, and Capt. George B. Perkins, on the walls of the Capitol, Concord ; Hon. Marcellus Eldredge, for the Public Library at Chatham, Mass. ; Hon. Harry Bingham, for the Public Li- brary at L. ; and John G. Whittier, at Danvers, Mass. He is a mem- ber of the Boston Art Club, A. April 29, 1771, dau. of Stephen and Martha (Foster) Spalding of Hud- son. This is probably the Silas who enlisted in quota of Swanzey and served three years in the N. H. Continental line (See State Papers, Vols. XVI. XVII., Hist. Charlestown, pp. 547, 663). No record of his first marriage is at hand. He res. in L. from 1793 to 1824. Farmer. Town Clerk, 1793-8-9-1800-3-4-5-7-8-9. Selectman, 1793-5-7- 1802-3-4-5-9-13. Rev. soldier. He owned the farm now owned by Amos Adams. In his old age be gave the farm to his son-in-law, Daniel Pike, on condition that he and his wife should be supported by Pike through life. In 1849 he opened the Flume in Franconia Notch, and three years later he began the building of the Profile House. With a prophetic vision of the possibilities of the summer business among the White Mountains from year to year, he labored on with untiring energy. During the later years he was associated in business with Charles H. Greenleaf, who succeeded the firm of Taft and Greenleaf. He resided in Little- ton from 1875 until he d., Feb. 14, 1881. Cong.
