1. WILLIAM TOWNE, emigrant ancestor of a numerous family, m. in Yarmouth, Eng., March 25, 1620, Joanna Blessing. Six of their eight children were baptized in Yarmouth. The family came to New England previous to 1640, and settled at Salem, Mass. Soon after 1650 he removed to Topsfield, Mass., where he d. about 1672. His widow d. about 1680.


2. JACOB TOWNE, son of William 1, b. in Yarmouth, Eng., baptized March 11, 1632. m. June 26, 1657, Catherine Symonds, dau. of John Symonds. He lived in Salem and in Topsfield, Mass., where he d., Nov. 27, 1704. Six children.


3. JACOB TOWNE, son of Jacob?, b. in Topsfield, Mass., Feb. 13, 1660. m. June 24, 1684, Phebe Smith, b. Aug. 26, 1661, dau. of Robert Smith. He d. in Topsfield, Mass., Oct. 4, 1741. His wife d. Jan. 14, 1740. Ten children.


4. JABEZ TOWNE, son of Jacob3, b. in Topsfield, Mass., June 15, 1704. m. March 30, 1730, Tryphenia Dwinnell. Lived in Boxford, Mass. Removed, 1767, to Londonderry. He signed the Association Test, in Londonderry, 1776. He d. April 1, 1783. She d. April 16, 1785. Their son, Jabez, Jr., d. in the French and Indian War, Massa- chusetts service, 1758.


5. JACOB TOWNE, son of Jabez", b. in Topsfield, Mass., Sept. 25, 1738. He served in a Massachusetts regiment in the French and Indian War, and was severely wounded in the disastrous assault upon Fort Ticonderoga, 1758. He was concealed by a comrade, and escaped the scalping knife of the savage foe. He removed to Keene, and continued a residence there through life. He was one of the "Company of Foot," 1773, signed the Association Test, 1776, and in the autumn of that year he served in Capt. Whitcomb's Co., Col. Ashley's Regt., raised to re-enforce the army under Gen. Gates. He m. Dec. 9, 1762, Susannah Brown, b. 1743. She d. in Keene, May 4, 1793. He d. 1830. His descendants generally have written the name Town or Towns.

The name has been spelled in numerous ways, some of the more common being : Tuthill, Tuttil, Tutall, Tuttell, Tutle, Tottle, Tothill, etc., but the last named seems to be the correct one, meaning "The Hill of God." There are many eminences in Eng. bearing the name of Tothill, and the present way of spelling is a corruption of it. (The Tuttle Family, by George F. Tuttle, New Haven, Conn.)


1. JOHN TUTTLE, bro. of Richard, of Boston, b. in England. m. Joanna - -. He emigrated to America and settled in Ipswich, Mass., as early as 1635. Representative, 1644 ; made freeman, March 13, 1639. He went to Ireland about the time the disheartened colonists of New Haven, Conn., were negotiating for the city of Galloway for a future home ; established himself advantageously there, and was joined by his wife in 1654. He d. in Carrickfergus, Ireland, Dec. 30, 1656.


2. SIMON TUTTLE, son of John 1, b. in 1637. m. first, in 1659, Joan, dau. of Thomas Burnham. m. second, in 1662-3, Sarah, dau. of John Cogswell, d. Jan. 24, 1732. In 1678, he had a right of commonage in Ipswich, Mass. d. Jan. 1692.

Medical Coll., Woodstock, Vt., from which he graduated in 1840. Dart. Coll. gave him the degree of A. M. in 1868. He then settled in L. the same year, where he practised, regular school, all his life, except five years spent in New Bedford, Mass., and a short time in a N. Y. hospital. He was a member of the White Mountain and Moosilauke Medical Societies, and has been Prest. of each. Unitarian. Democrat. Rep- resentative, 1865. Board of Health, 1873 to 84 inc. 1. JOSEPH UNDERWOOD, an emigrant from England, was of Hingham, Mass., 1837, and later of Watertown, Mass., where he was admitted freeman, 1645. He d. in Watertown, Feb. 16, 1676, aged about 62. . " Goodwife Underwood wife of Joseph Underwood dyed Jan. 28 1667." The probate records name the children : Joseph, Thomas, Sarah, Han- nah, Elizabeth, and Martha.

2. JOSEPH UNDERWOOD, son of Joseph 1, b. in Watertown, Mass., 1650, d. in Reading, Mass., 1691. His will names wife Elizabeth and children : John, Josepb, Jonathan, Joshua, Mary, Hannah, and Eliza- beth.


3. JOSEPH UNDERWOOD, son of Joseph2, b. in Watertown, Mass., May 28, 1681. m. in Reading, Mass., 1707, Susannah Parker, b. 1687, dau. of Nathaniel and Bethiah (Polley) Parker of Reading. He lived a few years in Reading, and removed, about 1715, to Westford, Mass. " He was active in all public affairs and was evidently a man of char- acter and influence." He was a farmer and innholder. He d. in Westford, Jan. 29, 1761. John Underwood of Bradford, Vt., and Jeremy Underwood of Jaffrey were sons of his son, John Underwood.


4. TIMOTHY UNDERWOOD, son of Joseph 8, b. in Westford, Mass., 1724. m. Rachel Russell. He was captain of a company from West- ford, engaged in the Concord and Lexington fight, April 19, 1775. He removed from Westford to Putney, Vt.


5. JAMES UNDERWOOD, son of Timothy", b. in Westford, Mass., 1771. In his childhood his father removed to Vermont. He m. Han- nah -, and lived in Springfield, Vt., until about 1815, when he removed to Swanzey. He was an innholder, and the Underwood Tavern is an inspiration in the annals of Swanzey. The record of the death of his first wife is not secured. He m. second, Dec. 6, 1809, Mrs. Eunice Sebastian, widow of Samuel Sebastian. He d. in Swan- zey, Feb. 4, 1832.


6. TIMOTHY UNDERWOOD, son of James 5, b. in Springfield, Vt., April, 1803. m. Ruth Burgess. For many years he was one of the well-known drivers of the mail coaches from Keene to Boston via Fitchburg. After the building of the Fitchburg R. R., he was proprietor of a livery stable in Fitchburg, Mass., where he d., Sept. 30, 1863. Of his eleven chil- dren only one has resided in this town.


7. EDWARD MONROE UNDERWOOD, son of Timothy ", b. in Fitchburg, Mass., July 8, 1837. m. July 5, 1864, Susie H., dau. of Jonathan Young, b. in Barrington, Sept. 30, 1838. He res. in L. from 1879 to 1888, and since 1896. Scythe-maker. Co. A, 35th Mass. Inf. Private. G. A. R.

Boston police many years, and later a captain in the force. A full record of his children is not at hand. His son, Guy C. Underwood, b. in L. Sept. 23, 1831, m. Elnora P. Connell. Through the active years of his life he was in the service of the city of Boston in the depart- ment of Public Institutions, and was a deputy warden of House of Correction and Superintendent at Deer and Rainsford Islands. He d. in Salem, Mass., Aug. 11, 1889. Joseph R. Underwood, son of Guy C., m. March 13, 1887, Janet Grace Taylor, b. Aug. 2, 1855, clerk Young's Hotel, Boston, Mass. Their children are : (1) Helen Prescott, b. March 13, 1892 ; (2) Edmund Ross, b. Aug. 20, 1893 ; (3) Victor Taylor, b. Sept. 12, 1896.
