16. ROGER WILLIAMS, the founder of Rhode Island, was a minis- ter of the Church of England and later a Nonconformist. He sailed from Bristol, Eng., Dec. 1, 1630, and was soon established as a min- ister at Salem, Mass. He was accused of heretical opinions. The story of his contention with the clergy and the hostility of the col- onists, his banishment from Massachusetts, and his active and re- warded labors in founding the colony of Rhode Island is familiar to every student of history. If he coutended for a greater freedom of conscience, he consistently yielded as much to all others. In his words : "I desire not that liberty to myself which I would not freely and impartially weigh out to all the consciences of the world. .. : That each town and division of people, yea, and each person, may freely enjoy what worship, what ministry, what maintenance to afford them, their soul desireth."
