COGSWELL

Tradition and probability identify the name Cogswell with the old English town of Coggeshall, which is located forty-four miles from London in the county of Essex. It is the belief of the Cogswells now holding the ancient Cogswell possessions in Westbury, County of Wilts, England, that their ancestors came from the county of Essex and were there known as Coggeshall with the various spellings which appear, Cogshall, Coggeshall, Hoggeshale, Cogesholl, Coge- shole, Coggashael, Cogshol, Coxhall, Cockshall and Coggshale. Besides the family tradition, experts in such matters say that Cogswell and Coggeshall in England have the same origin. The Coggeshalls in the reign of Henry VI became a widely distributed race, the branches remaining in several counties. Between Henry VI and Charles I there was plenty of time for the name to change among bad spellers. But while Coggeshall and Cogswell have the same

origin in England, they are two distinct names in America, although sometimes confounded. The Coggeshalls of this country have mostly descended from John Coggeshall, the first Governor of Rhode Island, while the Cogswells, with the exception of a few recent immigrants, have sprung from John Cogs- well, who came from Westbury Leigh, County of Wilts, England, and settled in 1635 at Ipswich, Mass .*

He d. 23 March, 1783. She d. 7 May, 1810. After a successful business life in Haverhill, Nathaniel Cogswell retired in 1766 and settled upon a New Hampshire farm in Atkinson. He became active in establishing religious and educational institutions in that town, giving the land and contributing freely towards the first meeting house, which was erected by private subscription in 1768-69. Prior to this, public worship was conducted in Mr. Cogswell's house. During the Revolutionary War, his patriot- ism was shown by large loans of money to provide equipments and provisions for the soldiers. These loans, because of a depreciated currency, proved almost a total loss. Besides loans of money, he gave eight sons to the army, who served with distinction, filling an aggregate term of service of more than 38 years, said to be the longest contributed by any family in the country. They all sur- vived the war and became prominent in professional and civil life. The last survivor was Joseph Cogswell, M. D., who d. at Tamworth, 17 March, 1851.
