MATTHEWS-MATHES.
Compiled by Harriet Louise Matthews of Lynn, Mass.
1. FRANCIS1 MATTHEWS, the immigrant ancestor of the family in C. first appears on the list of men who came to this country in the Mason colony, 1631. His name is also found among the signers of the "Exeter Combination" in 1639. The location of the man is found by a grant of land, 1 Oct., 1637, when Vines, Josselyn and Warnerton, as agents of the Laconia Association granted a lease of a part of "the Great Island," the present town of Newcastle, to "ffrancis Matthews for one thousand years." This was reconveyed to the wid. in the same name in 1656 and 1664. In addition to land on the Great Island, Fran- cis bought 16 June, 1640, of William Beard, a house and land at Oyster River, and 7 July, 1644, William Hilton conveyed to him 88 acres of land at Oyster River. The location of the Oyster River property is given in "Historical Memoranda" published in a Dover newspaper about 1851: "The site of the original settlement at Oyster River is very beautiful, it is just at the head of the main branch of the Piscat- aqua, commands a fine view of the confluence of Great Bay, Bellamy Bank, and Salmon Falls Rivers, and evidences the good taste of the senior Frances Matthews." To this was added a large tract of "salt marsh" and other grants, until he became the owner of a large part of the north shore of the Great Bay. Francis also held property on "Smutty Nose," Isle of Shoals, where at that time was a large colony of fishermen.
The parentage of Francis Matthews, dates of birth and marriage record have not been proved, but recently there has been found on the parish records of Ottery St. Mary, Devon, Eng., under date of 28 Nov., 1622, the marriage of one "ffrancis Matthew and Thomasine Chanon." From the fact that the men of N. H. in the 1631 colony were largely gathered from Devon and Cornwall, and because Ottery St. Mary is near to Plymouth and Exeter, it seems probably that this "ffrancis" and the immigrants "ffrancis and Thomasine" may have been the same. All genealogical records of N. H. have hitherto stated that Francis and Thomasine Matthews must have been m. in England before 1630. Savage and other writers have given but three children to the N. H. family, but if it is proved that the Ottery St. Mary "ffrancis and

Thomasine" came to America in the Mason colony, two more daus. must be added to the family, for the parish records at Ottery St. Mary bear the names of Elizabeth Matthew, bapt. 23 Dec., 1623; ffrances Matthew, bapt. 20 Feb., 1625, both daus. of ffrancis Matthew. (No records of this family later than 1625.) The name of Matthews comes from Wales, the first of the name, Sir Matthew-ap-Jevan, feudal baron of Llandaff, whose pedigree can be traced back to Cunedda, the Cambro- British prince, and like all Welsh pedigrees runs back to remote antiq- uity. Children given to Francis and Thomasine Matthews by Savage:
i. WALTER2.
2. ii. BENJAMIN.
iii. MARTHA.
No dates of birth have been found, the name of the dau. is given in the will of Walter. Thomasine, wid. of Francis, gave to her grandson, Will Brookin, son of Godfrie Brookin, certain property, deed dated 16 Oct., 1689. The name of Francis Matthews appears upon the inven- tory of Nicholas Brown, 10 May, 1648, where he makes his mark "F. M." He probably d. soon after, for on the first extant tax list of Dover, 1648, the name of Thomasine Matthews, wid. of Francis, is given with four others as paying the largest taxes. Thomasine d. about 1704, when the estate was settled, 56 years after the death of Francis. Walter Matthews' will dated 15 April, 1678, proved 25 June, 1678, mentions son, Samuel, daus., Susanna Young, Mary Senter, Matthews Young, Thomas Snell, son of "my sister Martha Browne."
2. BENJAMIN2 MATTHEWS (Francis1) was, according to Savage, a freeman in 1669, one of those named to meet and choose a committee to attend the council at Portsmouth, 16 March, 1679. Date of birth and mar- riage not found on Durham records, but it is supposed that he was m. as early as 1669. By the will of one Thomas Footman, made 14 Aug., 1667, he mentions "my brother Bengemin Mathews." This has led early N. H. genealogists to state that Footman married a dau. of Francis Matthews. Catharine Footman, wid. of Thomas, m. second, William Durgin before 25 June, 1672. Only one child has been found recorded to Benjamin Matthews, Francis, who administered on his father's estate, 9 March, 1709-10. The Dorothy Matthews, whose name appears on N. H. records, 27 Sept., 1683, may have been the wife of Benjamin Matthews. 3. i. Francis3.
3. CAPT. FRANCIS3 MATTHEWS (Benjamin?, Francis1) proprietor of C., b. in Dover (Oyster River parish) as early as 1670; m. in Dover, 23 Feb., 1691-92, Ruth, dau. of Abraham Bennett of Dover. Francis became a man of considerable civic and military importance in Dover and Durham; he represented the town of Durham in the Provincial government for five years; held various town offices, selectman, 1707- 20; town clerk, 1732-36. The first meeting of the freeholders of Durham was called by Francis Matthews, Monday, 26 June, 1732, "at the meeting-house at the Falls." His military titles were Serg., 1707-

10; Ensign, 1711-26; Capt., 1727-55. The Matthews garrison (otherwise Mathes) stood at Durham Point; it was no doubt built by Capt. Francis on land which has remained in the family since the origi- nal deed. Records of N. H. towns granted at this time, show the name of Francis Matthews as petitioner and proprietor in most of the towns north of Dover. The name appears with all the varieties of spelling common to the time, usually Mathes, although the marriage of Francis with Ruth Bennett is recorded as Matthews. The C. petition of 1727 bears the name of Capt. Francis and of two of his sons, Francis, Jr., and Abraham. He must have d. about 1755, for on 16 June, 1755, transfers of property were made "lately belonging to our honored Father and Grandfather." Children:
i. BENJAMIN4, m. 17 Dec., 1716, Abigail, dau. of Nathaniel and grand- dau. of Valentine Hill of Dover, hence the name of Valentine Mathes, which has appeared in every generation of this branch of the family down to the present time. This Benjamin may have been the one of that name who was "baptized Dec. 12, 1724, died the same day, aged 31 years."
4. ii. FRANCIS, JR., proprietor of C.
iii. ABRAHAM, proprietor of C., m. Phebe Davis, dau. of James Davis of Dover.
4. FRANCIS4 MATTHEWS (Francis3, Benjamin?, Francis1) b. probably in Dur- ham; m. in Newington, 28 Nov., 1720, Lydia, dau. of Thomas Drew of Dover. Children:
i. RUTH5, b. 12 Oct., 1721; m. Joseph Sias of Durham and Lee; d. at the home of her dau., Lydia, wife of David Lawrence of Epping, 10 Feb., 1801, aged 79. (Epping records.) Joseph Sias was one of the proprietors of C.
ii. GERSHOM, b. in Durham; m. 22 June, 1757, Elizabeth Wheston, and settled in that part of C. now Loudon. Children, b. in C. and Loudon: i. Hannah. ii. John, b. 1771. iii. Joseph. iv. Francis, b. 1776.
5. iii. BENJAMIN, b. about 1724.
iv. GIDEON, b. 8 Nov., 1728; m. first, 30 Jan., 1755, Anna, dau. of Nathaniel Randall of Lee; m. second, Anna, dau. of Benjamin and Abigail (Stevens) Whitcher of Nottingham, b. 10 May, 1748, d. 11 Nov., 1822. He d. 3 Jan., 1815.
5. BENJAMIN5 MATHES (Francis4, Francis3, Benjamin2, Francis1), known on the records of Durham and Lee as Benjamin Mathes, Jr., was b. in Durham, about 1724. He m. in Newington, 20 June, 1745, Anna, dau. of Eleazer and Anna Coleman, b. in Newington, 29 May, 1726. Benjamin, with his brothers, received his share of the land of Francis, Sr., and Francis, Jr., and according to deeds at Exeter and Dover, disposed of his interests in Durham and Lee to his brother, Gideon, and sister, Ruth (Mathes) Sias. As early as 2 May, 1750, he is found among the grantees of New Durham. Whether this family remained in New Durham later than 1769, is unknown, but in 1777, 12 June, Benjamin appears as one of the selectmen in Allenstown, where he signed a certificate for payment to a Revolutionary soldier. On 2 Dec., 1790, Benjamin Mathes, Jr., of Allenstown, Ruth and Joseph Sias of

Durham, Gershom Mathes of Loudon, sell to Gideon Mathes of Lee, their right and title to the farm of Gideon in Lee. Signed 2 Dec., by Ruth and Gershom; 30 Dec., by Benjamin. This is the last record of Benjamin that has been found. His name as "head of a family" does not appear in the 1790 census, recently published by the U. S. govern- ment. Because of this, it is surmised that he might at that time have been living with one of his children. The dates of birth of his children are not complete, and it is only from data gathered from his grand- children that all of their names are known. They are given below, but presumably not in order of birth. Children:
i. BENJAMIN6, said to have settled in New Sharon, Vt. ii. Lydia. iii. John, settled and d. in Northwood, about 1814, leaving sons, Joseph? and John. iv. Betsey. v. Joanna.
6. vi. ELIJAH, b. 27 May, 1759 (probably in New Durham).
vii. THOMAS, b. 6 April, 1761; m. 30 June, 1788, Sally Weeks; settled in Deerfield, where he d. 26 Dec., 1833.
viii. JOSEPH, m. in Winthrop, Me., about 1795, Meredith, dau. of Solo- mon and Hannah (Leonard) Esty of Winthrop, b. 10 Aug., 1773. Child: Joseph7, b. 29 Dec., 1796.
ix. DANIEL, b. 8 March, 1766; m. 23 Feb., 1796, Mary, dau. of Jede- diah and Sarah (Morrill) Prescott of Deerfield, b. 19 Feb., 1766. They settled in Searsmont, Me., where Daniel d. 4 March, 1826. She d. at Liberty, Me., 1 April, 1857.
X RUTH. It may be that this Ruth was the one of that name who m. in C., Joseph Taylor, 25 July, 1781.
xi. JACOB, b. 18 March, 1774; went to Me .; m. in Industry, 25 Feb. 1803, Hannah, dau. of Zoe and Sally (Bettis) Withee. They lived for a time in Industry, but subsequently moved to St. Albans. They were the grandparents of the late Llewellyn Powers, governor of Maine, 1897-1901.
6. ELIJAH® MATHES (Benjamins) b. 27 May, 1759, probably in New Durham; m. in Nottingham, 1 Oct., 1780, Mary, dau. of Joshua and Ann (Harvey) Stevens of Nottingham. It is a tradition that Elijah was either "bound out" to his Uncle and Aunt Sias, or that he went to live with them when he was quite young. At the time of his marriage, he was "of Lee," and it was while living there that he probably met his wife, Mary Stevens, familiarly called "Molly." She was descended on her father's side from John Stevens of Salisbury, b. 1611, and on her mother's side from James Harvey and William Maxwell, Scotch-Irish immigrants, who came to this country from Port Rush, Ireland; sailing 7 Aug., 1726, landed in Boston, 8 Oct., from thence they went to Haverhill, Derry and Notting- ham, where they settled. Soon after the marriage of Elijah and Mary (Stevens) Mathes, he purchased of John Bean, seven acres of land in C., lot No. 90. Later Elijah purchased of Josiah Dow 100 acres of land. Under date of 9 Dec., 1809, he bought of David Kent of C., lot 92. From a manuscript sketch of this family written by Thomas Stev- ens Clough, a grandson of Elijah, the following is quoted: "Elijah Mathes late of C., at the age of 21, m. Mary Stevens. Soon after, 'they twain' settled in C., about one and one half miles westerly from Hill's Corner. . These parents resided in this one place together for 73 years, and three days, when the tie was broken by the death of the

wife and mother, 4 Oct., 1853, aged 90 years, 10 months and 19 days; 22 Dec., 1853, the aged husband followed at the ripe age of 94 years, 6 months and 25 days."
Elijah and his wife are buried in the family burial lot on the farm in C., now owned by Olwyn W. Dow. Under date of 8 March, 1909, Mrs. Ella (Hills) Nelson, a descendant of Elijah, writes that "the old house is still standing, but used for storing farm tools and boiling sap. The big chimney built in the center of the house has been torn down to make room for the sap pan. The heavy timbers of the frame show the strength of this old house. The sweep is gone, but the well has never been filled." Children, b. in C .:
