9. CHARLES WARREN4 CHASE (Charles3, Levi?, Edward1) b. Dec. 8, 1835; d. Aug. 10, 1907. After graduating from Dartmouth College he was admitted to the bar of N. H., in Sept., 1862. He immediately enlisted as a private in Co. G., 12th N. H. Vol. The company organized in Lake Village and elected him captain. During the siege of Fredericksburg, Capt. Chase was seriously wounded and continued to suffer from the effects during life. In the spring of 1863 he was made post commandant at Jefferson, Ind., and acting colonel there and at Louisville. During the Morgan raid he contracted a severe ill- ness. He settled in Clinton, Iowa, in 1865. Twice he was elected clerk of the courts of Clinton County. Later he was elected city attorney of Clinton, which office he held until elected county attorney. Subsequently, he was. chosen mayor of Clinton, and elected judge of the circuit court. He was for many years a member of the Clinton school board. Judge Chase was recog- nized as Clinton's leading attorney. His reputation was not alone confined to Iowa, but in other states his ability was known and appreciated.

JAMES CHASE was a native of Gilmanton, son of Robert and Polly (Cross) Chase. He m. 10 Dec., 1843, Abigail Glines, b. 1808, in Salem, Mass. She was a dau. of Isaac Glines, b. 1778, in C .; m. Abigail McDaniel. Mr. and Mrs. Chase spent the most of their life in C., owning a farm situated on the main road from the Center to Tilton, a short distance south of the Northfield line. Both d. in C .: he 20 Jan., 1892; she 24 Jan., 1892.

He d. 1829, aged 90. The youngest of Joseph Clifford's 12 children was Joseph7 who inherited the home place in Gilmanton, being b. 30 March, 1794, and having 12 children, of whom only one is living, Alvin Clifford of Boston. The sons were Benjamin, Barnard, Warren, and Alvin. The daus. were Louisa (Whidden), Frances (Moore), Sophronia (Hackett), Hannah (Weeks-Pulsifer-Wyman), Ann (Sleeper), Caroline (not married), Dorothy (Davis), Charlotte (Whidden) and Laura (Rockwood). Joseph& Clifford, great-grandfather of Solomon Moodys, b. 1718; m. 1737, in Kingston, Mary Healey. Isaac4 Clifford, great-great- grandfather of Solomon Moodys, b. 1696, in Kingston; m. Sarah, dau. of William Healey. Isaac4 d. 1745 (son Joseph executor). Israels Clifford, great-great-great-grandfather of Solomon Moodys, b. 1647; m. 1680, Ann Smith. He was one of the incorporators of Hampton Falls. He was the son of John? Clifford, b. 1614; d. 1694, of whom nothing is known except that he came to this country with his father George1 Clifford who arrived about 1640, for in 1645 he was one of the first members of the Ancient & Honorable. Artillery Co. of Boston and in same year settled in Hampton and there d. No record exists of the wives of either father or son but it is known that they were of the ancient and noble family of Clifford in England and that they came from the parish of Arnold, Nottingham County. The site of their first home in Hampton is located and though no house has been there in over 100 years, the bed of lilies shoot up each spring.


Solomon Moody& Clifford came to C. when a young man, where he m. 27 Nov., 1834, Matilda Ingalls (see Ingalls Gen.); resided at Hill's Corner with the exception of a few years in Lake Village (now Lakeport). Occupation, shoemaker and farmer; was justice of the peace; d. 12 Jan. 1896. Mrs. Clifford d. 23 April, 1895; both d. in C. Children:

1. JOHN! CLOUGH (sometimes spelled Cluff and Cluffe) was b. about 1613, and came to this country from London, Eng., in the ship Elizabeth, April, 1635. His name is first found on the records of Charlestown, Mass. From there he went to Watertown, Mass., and became a pro- prietor. Later he removed to Salisbury, Mass. Occupation, house car- penter. He m. first, Jane She d. 16 Jan., 1680, in Salis- bury; m. second, 15 Jan., 1686, Martha Cilley; she survived him. John received land in the first division at Salisbury and again in 1640; he was a taxpayer in 1650 and he subscribed to the oath of fidelity in that year; he was admitted free man in 1642. Numerous transfers of of property to and from him are recorded in the old Norfolk County records. He d. 26 July, 1691; his will was made on the third day of the same month and was proved the following Nov. Children by first marriage:

He d. with his son Abner in Loudon (Patrick Hist. Sermon), probably in 1792. A will of Jeremiah Clough, dated April 4, 1792, and proved April 26, 1792, is in the probate records at Exeter.
