She d. 10 Sept., 1881. Mary, the wife of David Hodgkins, was a dau. of John Wilson who came to Marblehead from Edinburgh about 1750; b. 27 Feb., 1748; d. 1793. The grandfather of Albert Francis Drew was Atwood? Drew, who m., 1802, Lydia, dau. of William and Lydia Rider. His great-grandfather, David1 Drew, m. Elizabeth Atwood.

JAMES S. ELKINS, son of James? and Mehitable (Rand) Elkins, was b. 24 Dec., 1809, in Rye. His father was b. 3 May, 1777, in Rye, d. 29 Nov., 1855, in C .; his mother was b. 19 June, 1787, in Rye, d. 20 July, 1859, in C. The grandfather of James S. was Samuel Elkins. James S. was a stone-cutter by trade, and for several years he was engaged in this business in Quincy, Glouces- ter and Boston, Mass. In 1834 he came with his parents to C., where he pur- chased a farm. In 1873 he disposed of this property and removed to the Center. He m. first, 1840, Abigail Tallant; she d. 22 Nov., 1884, aged sixty-eight years; he m. second, 2 Dec., 1885, Lucia Maria, dau. of Jonathan and Phoebe (Eastman) Sargent, b. 10 Sept., 1833. Mr. Elkins d. 4 Aug., 1898. He was a successful business man, a public-spirited citizen and a generous contrib- utor to every worthy cause.

EMERY .*


1. JOHN' EMERY, SR., son of John and Agnes Emery of Romsey, Hants, Eng., was b. in Eng., 29 Sept., 1598. He sailed from Southampton, 3 April, 1635, with his brother Anthony, in the ship James of London, their wives and one or two children each, probably, with them. He landed in Boston 3 June, 1635, and went soon after to Newbury, where he had a town grant of half an acre for a house lot. John Emery was made freeman 2 June, 1641, and recorded as one of the ninety-one freeholders of the town 2 Dec., 1642. On 16 March, 1663, he was presented to the Court at Ipswich by Henry Jacques, Constable of Newbury, for enter- taining travelers, and Quakers; 5 May, 1663, his presentment for enter- taining Quakers was referred unto next Court. The next Court fined him four pounds, costs and fees for entertaining strangers. In May, 1663, he petitioned the General Court for the remission of his fine. His petition was signed by the selectmen of the town and fifty of the citi- zens. The fine was not remitted. He was selectman, 1661; fence
