13. HIRAM STEVENS& MATHEWS (John7, Elijah6) b. in C., 7 July, 1830. He became a member of the Old South Church choir, Boston, and was also a member of the famous Handel and Haydn Society. For a time he was a member of the choir of the Park Street Church. Mr. Mathews m. in Boston, 24 Oct., 1854, Lucinda Hanson. In 1855, he moved to St. Paul, Minn., where he remained about five months, from thence he went to Alton, Ill., where he has since remained. Children: i. McCLARY.


The McClarys of C. were descendants of Andrew McClary who emigrated from Ireland in 1733 with his wife and children and settled in Londonderry, where he remained till 1738; then removed to Epsom where he soon after d. Children: Andrew?, John, Margaret, Jane and Ann.


Andrew?, the elder son, was a distinguished citizen of Epsom and was famous as an Indian fighter. When the Revolutionary war broke out, he led a company of eighty men to Cambridge, Mass. The N. H. troops were organized into a regt. of which John Stark was chosen col. and Andrew? McClary, major. The latter was killed at Bunker Hill. Andrew McClary: m. Elizabeth McCrillis. They had eight children of whom William3, the fourth child, m. Randall. In company with others he removed from Epsom to Canada and settled in Stanstead. Of his children, Williams returned to N. H., and settled in Sanbornton.

McCRILLIS.


JOHN! MCCRILLIS was of Scotch ancestry, who emigrated from Scotland to North Ireland about the middle of the seventeenth century. He m. in Londonderry, Ire., about 1700, Margaret Burnside, also of Scotch descent, and settled in Aghadowey near Londonderry. After all his children were b. and his wife had d., he came to America, bringing five of his children if no more, leaving behind a dau., Jean. Mr. McCrillis sailed from Port Rush, Ire., 7 Aug., 1726, and arrived at Boston 8 Oct., following. He went to Haverhill 26 Oct., where he remained until 19 April, 1727, and that day went to Derry. Later he bought lands in Nottingham, "two home lots" from George St. Claire for £100, on which he settled as early as 1734. Unlike most of the Scotch- Irish emigrants, he was a member of the Church of England. The rector of the Episcopal Church in Portsmouth went to Nottingham to bapt. his grandchildren. Other Scotch-Irish families such as the McClarys, Harveys, Kelseys and Simpsons came in the same ship with them, all of whom settled in Nottingham. These families did not intermarry with the Irish.

She m. second, Samuel Moore of C., who was a widower, with chil- dren (See Moore Gen.) and by whom she had three children. She had three daus. by Col. McCrillis. These three families of children and three orphan nieces of Col. McCrillis by the name of Coffin were reared in the Moore-McCrillis tavern, of which Col. McCrillis was proprietor for nearly fifty years. He was Maj. and Lieut .- Col. of the 11th Regt., N. H. Militia, held the commission of Justice of the Peace, and was postmaster of C. He was prominent in the Masonic order. His wife d. 7 Jan., 1822. He m. second, Mary Gerrish, who survived him. He d. 31 May, 1825. Children by first marriage:

MOORE .*


1. ENSIGN JOHN' MOOR, the ancestor of the Moores of C., was b. 9 April, 1696. He spent his early years in Portsmouth, where his father, Samuel, a mariner, and mother, Mary, kept a small tavern near the meeting house, in 1703, 1704 and 1705. He m. in 1720 at Oyster River Falls, now Durham, Hannah, dau. of John Sias, a Huguenot refugee, who settled there, b. 21 April, 1700. In 1722, John Moor sold his interest in the Portsmouth home and bought a small farm in Durham. There at the age of 21 he became a grantee of C. He early took up settle- ment in the new town, buying more land from time to time for his four sons. 20 March, 1739-40, he was chosen a highway surveyor, indicat- ing at least a partial residence in town. In 1743, he was again sur- veyor of highways; in the following year, he was a lot layer, and in 1745 he was elected constable. In 1750 he was selectman and in 1754, 1758 and 1760 he was moderator of the town meetings. His death occurred at the age of 90 years, 10 April, 1786, two months after that of his wife. They lived together 66 years. Their home was on the 40

acre lot No. 106 in the southern part of the town. Traces of the cellar of the house may still be seen and near by at the brook was the "cave" he built for a temporary residence during his first years in the wilder- ness. Children:

2. WILLIAM2 MOORE (John1) b. 19 Aug., 1720; d. 3 July, 1804; m. Margaret Forrest, b. 10 July, 1723. (See Forrest Gen.) William Moore, styled Lieut. in the town records, bought 40 acre lot No. 55 in 1748. He lived at this location, the southwesterly corner of the western cross roads in the southern part of the town, until his death. The present Gilman house was built by him, the present barn there being raised when news of the breaking out of the Revolution was received. Children:
