This is lost, and the history of the one which it was to commemo- rate. There are three stones also in the church floor, covered with the carpet. They, with the pre- ceding one, as also Col. Redford's, stood or lay, it is said, in the pathway leading to the church door, and were removed in the march of general improvements.

1 an old Inhabitant of the County of monmouth anda Proprieter of the Eastern Division of new Jersey by Which the Impartial Reader may In Some measure make a Judgment Whether the first Inhabitants of sª County ought In Justice to pay Quitrents for the Land they hold or not ; Written by Will Will be true Who arrived In sd County on the first of may 1666 and has been a Constant Inhabitant and an observer of affairs and Transactions there in to the first Day of December 1727.
Proprietor. ST. I am glad to See you and much more Should be to Know the Reasons why you refuse to pay your Quitrents that has been So long Due & unpa
Will Will be True. I Think not Due Therefore not paid.
Pro: How Can that be, When the Patent by which you hold your Land oblidges you to pay the rent therein reserved.
Will. I think that no obligation at all. Have Patience and Give me Leave and you Shall hear my reasons.
Pro: That is wbt I want to know therefore Say on.
Will. The first to be Considered Is the Great Hazard Wee run, the Extream Hardships wee under- went. The many Difficulties Wee met with and the Charges wee was at In En Largeing the Kings Dominions by Setling a Wilderness Country In the midst of a Barbarous People who had Searce Washt their hands that had So Lately been Imbured In Christian Blood :
Next is the Good Right Wee have to the Soill and the Just measures wee took to obtain it (viz) not only by purchaseing from the Indians by the Governours Leave but also Got it Confirmed by a Pattent he Granted to twelve Persons Called Pattentees and their Associates bearing Date the eight of aprill 1665 for That tract of Land begining at Sandy Point and Runing along the bay to the mouth of Rariton River from thence Going along the River tell A Corner to the westermost Part of a Certain mash, Land that Divides the river In Two parts, from that part to Run in a Direet South West Line In to the Woods twelve miles, then to turn away Southeast and by South till it falls Into the main ocean; For Which Tract of Land the Indian Sachems Did acknowledge before the Govern- our to have Received Sattisfaction: and again the Sd Patent was Confirmed by Governour Phillip Cartroert [Carterett in different ink and writing written over Cartroert] and Councill by and Instru- ment under their Hands bearing Date the 28 of may 1672. as followeth. upon the address of John boune Richard Hartshorne James Grover and Jonathan Holmes Pattentees and James Ashton and John Hanse associates (Impowered by the Pattentees an Associates of the towns of Shrewsbury & Middle- ton) to the Governour and Council for Confirmation of Certain Privilledges Granted unto them by Coll. Richard Nichols as by Patent under his hand and Seal bearing Date the 8th of aprill 1665 the Gover- nour and Councill Did aeknowledge and Confirm to the Sd Pattentees and their Associates the Par- ticulars following Being their Rights Contained In the Sd Pattent :
Impd. That the Sd Pattentees and their Associates have full power Licence & authourity to Dis- pose of the Land Expressed In the Sd Pattent As to them Shall seem wise &c-Yet notwithstanding the Good Right and Great Assurance Wee had for our Land about the year 1676 Governour Cart- oret Gave Notice for all Persons to take Pattents for their Land under the yearly rent of half penney pr Aere & not he would grant it to any other that would.
Some Persons Knowing the Iust Right they had & the Iust meashures they had taken to obtain

it, Refused to be at the Charges of Resurveying and again Patten[t]ing their own Land on them terms and their Land was by the Governour granted to other Persons, So it was not of our Choice but your unjust Dealing that oblidged us to take pattents on the terms you please to Grant or be Dis- possessed of our Land :
Pro. That Could not be that you Could Loose it if it was your own; the Law would Protect you In the Enjoyment of it.
Will. That is true Provided wee Could have Stood on Even Grounds with the Proprietors, Which wee Could not Expect So Long as the Proprietors had the putting In of Governours and they the ap- pointing of Sheriffs & Judges and their Sheriffs ye Impannelling of Jurys, It being Incident to the most of man kind to oblige their Best Benefactors Wee Doubted of Justice.
Pro. If you had Doubted of Justice here you might have had Justice at home :
Will. No Doubt but wee being poor Scarce able to Stand a Law Sute here much Less to Remove it home to England :
Pro. Certainly you are very forgetfull, or you would not argue against Paying Rent for your Land When by (your Darling ) Nichols his Pattent you was to pay rent for your Land :
Will. I have not forgot I Well remember by that Patent Wee Where to enjoy our Lands for the Space of Seven years free of rent Custom and Excise : and then to pay Such Rent as others the Inhabitants of his Royal highness Territories Should be oblidged to. The which wee Would Gladly Do now Pro- vided wee Could Enjoy all the Land and other Priveledges Granted to us by ye patent or if wee Could have the Liberty confirmed to us by Governour Carteret and Council that [are] ye Disposeing of the Land Expressed In Nichols his Patent, As to us Should Seem meet, Wee No Doubt might have money to pay Such rent as was Reserved by that Pattent; and a Good Sum to put In our Pockets, But Sence you have Cut us Short of all the Privelledges Granted by that Pattent, and also of that which was Con- firmed by Governour Cartoret and have Divided among your Selves and Granted to others, a Hundred Thousand acres of our own Land, and Claim a Right to at Least Two hundred thousand more, I think you may be Easey that Wee Injoy between [ sic] and thirty Thousand acres free of rent.
Pro: Now you have Sd. wht. you Can, I have that to Say which you Can :
Will: Let us hear what that is
Pro: about the year 1682 or 3 the pretended Pattentees & their Associates Did Surrender their right to Nichols Pattent on Condition that the Pattentees each to have 500 acres & their Associates Each 100 acres free of Quitrent the Which was Confirmed to them by pattent :
Will. if it was as you Say Doubtless you can prove that ( or wee Do our right) by an Instrument In Writing. However if it was So it is Just makeing Good the old Proverb. you pd with a pig of our own Sow the Land was our own bought with our money Confirmed by two Governours It never Cost the Proprietors one farthing to purchase it of the Indians ye right owner and Chief proprietors thereof.
If it was as you say I know nothing of it And I chalenge all the Proprietors and records In Jersey to Prove that Either my father or my Self Ever had one foot of free land Granted to us on that accompt, But this I very well Remember That about the year 1082 or 3 Gawin Lawry was the Pro- prietor Governour and he made Robert Hambleton Sheriff of the County of monmouth and Gave him order to Distrain for Quitrent accordingly he Distrained the Cattle of one John Smith In middletown Who was So Enraged he got his Gun and had he not Been Disswaded by Some persons of more inod- eration then himself he had Done the Sheriff Some mischief.
