* This volume served as a town, as well as a county book, inasmuch as the town preceded the county, and was its sole place of habitation.
The entries at first were somewhat voluminous, but rapidly decreased before the Revolutionary period. By this it is not meant to convey the impression that land transfers were not as common, but that the parties to the conveyances were indifferent to their recording, or that imperfect or difficult provision was made therefor. As a consequence, the titles in Cape May Co. this day are largely based upon unrecorded deeds, and are often the subject of disputes.
Within the past twenty-five years claimants have arisen for properties held by the Hands, and by Mr. Nathan Price, the present owner of Town Bank, the site of the first settlement in the county.
The original whalesmen who settled here made a joint contract for land. One of the descendants of these proprietors pre- sented a deed to Mr. Price, which claimed the lands that he had been in possession of many years. However, it was unsigned. probably because the whaling interests had already commenced to diminish, and the property was considered of little value. Of course it proved valueless in its unsigned condition, but Mr. Price bought out all rights the claimant had. Mr. Price, at the time of my interview with him, possessed a large number of deeds, none of which were recorded, nor seemed likely to be. as the present law demands that a deed of greater age than ten vears, is to be filed in the County Clerk's office, which few are willing to acquiesce in, not caring to part with their originals .- J. E. S.
