INSCRIPTIONS

FROM FRIENDS' MEETING HOUSE YARD, SHREWSBURY, N. J.

The stones in this yard are noticeable for their small size and absence of ornament. It was considered among this sect, perhaps more so formerly than now, a mark of pride and too great ostentation, to erect tablets over their dead. It is traditionary in Shrewsbury, that, a hundred years or more ago, when a number of Friends had too far departed from an observance of this rule, they were promptly brought to a realizing sense of their error, by a co-religionist, of the name of Parker. He, accompanied by his laboring men, applied sledge-hammers to the most prominent stones, and only ceased, when the débris of many was thrown into the highway, as a warning to others. James Steen, Esq., of Eatontown, an antiquary of great diligence and ability, has in his possession a portion of a headstone which may be one of the relics of Friend Parker's onslaught. This stone is marked, M. P. 1715, and probably stood for Mary Parker.
