I have not been able to identify the family of a Peleg Cornell, Jr., and his wife Catharine who were early settlers of Glenville. He was not a son of Peleg and Mary (Rus- seli) Cornell, and brother of Rich- ard as might be suspected. Their son Peleg (175. 1812) never came to New York. I would appreciate any Information about this Peleg Cornell and his ancestry. He was born about 1772 and died in Glen- ville July 8, 1850. His wife Cathar- ine (name unknown ) was born

about 1775 and died Oct. 9, 1844. Their son William was the founder of a large family. He was born in 1808 and died Nov. 4, 1894. He mar- ried Nancy Y. Ford who was born in 1810 and died Feb. 16, 1885.

MORE GIFTS FOR THE FAIR- FIELD ROOM OF THE HERKIMER COUNTY HISTORIC SOCIETY

By S. C. Kimm, Ilarkimer

· The Fairfield alumni association is indebted to Mrs. Ott. Deck, North Washington street, Herkimer for a series of photographs which the late Dr. Deck secured while he was a student in Fairfield in 1888. On the reverse side are written the names of about 60 students and teachers, a great aid in identifying the individ- ual members of the different groups. The Fairfield room has hundreds of photos of old students but unfortun- ately only a few are named.

The Faculty of 1888

According to one of the group pic- tures presented by Mrs. Deck the teahers of 59 years ago when her husband was a student consisted of eight members as follows: D. D. Warne, principal, F. L. Warne, vice principle, Prof. James M. Hall, Prof. C. J. Wolcott, Abbie E. Coon, Bertha H. Coleman, Edith S. Winn and Mrs. C. S. Willard, wife of Dr. Willard, viliage physician.

Plug Hats

Old timers will recall that 1888 was the day of plug hats. Derby hats were making their appearance to be fololwed by wide brim fet hats. To- day's style is no hat at all regard- less of the weather-a style not at

top. In addition to a plug hat the dude of '88 always carried a more or less ornate walking stick (cane). In a group picture of six Philos we see the likeness of C. H. Dewey, late of Washington, D. C .; O. Harra of Little Falls, C. E. Morey, the organ build- er of Utica, Dwight Griswold, straw- berry king, Dr. H. R. Barringer, Bay Shore, Long Island and J. B. Riddell of Little Falls. Two of these young- sters sported plug hats. The rest had derbies.

Athenians

The group of the Athenian Liter- ary society consisted of 30 young ladies old enough to wear dresses long enough to sweep the sidewalks and wear tightly laced corsets. My lady of '88 avoided sun tan and was a delicate creature with soft hnds and easily shocked; afraid of mice and spiders of which there were plenty in the Old Sem. However nearly ali of this group of 30 made splendid wives, mothers and grand- mothers. If any are living today they see their granddaughters wear- ing furs in Juiy and going bare leg- ged to high shool in winter with paint enough to bedeck an Iroquois brave. The grandchildren of today have been liberated from sweeping gowns, tight corsets, pretense of timid gentility and fear of sun tan. Could it be possible that they enjoy just a little too much liberty in con- trast to the social restrictions of the '80s ?
