One vessel from Lake Ontario, Schr. C. A. Simpson.
. Loaded with pine lumber at Quebec for New York. + Wheat to Montreal, and Lumber from Quebec to Boston Wheat to Ogdensburgh, and barley from Montreal to New York. § Loaded with pine
lamber at Quebec for Queenstown.
The estimate of ti nnaze of cargoes and value of same, is made on those only which passed from Lake Erie to the Atlantic Ocean without breaking bulk.
By the above table it will be seen, that the new timber districts have been opened, the export of staves from ports on Lake Erie, to Staves from which find an outlet by the Rail Roads directly to Lake Ontario, and the St. Lawrence River. Thus the Quebec and Mon- treal markets are being supplied, in part, from new districts, the Staves from which do not pass through the Welland Canal. European ports direct, during the year 1859, amounted to 1,092,780 in number; equal to 6,291 tons. Export to European ports direct, in 1858, was 577,562 staves in number, equal to 2,600 tons. Increase of tonnage for 1859 over 1858 is 142 per cent.
The total export of staves, lumber, coal, &c., from Lake Erie to the Atlantic Ocean, via the St. Lawrence River, in 1858, was 4.491 tons .- In 1859, the total of such export was 11,453 tons, being an increase of 6,962 tons, equal to 155 per cent increase.
CONCLUSION.
By comparison of the foregoing tables, it will be seen that for the past five years, of all the Stares arriving at Tide Water on the Hudson River, by the Erie and Champlain Canals, 78 per cent. were cleared at Buffalo, thus passing through the entire length of the Erie Canal.
The tonnage of Staves arriving at Tide Water on the Hudson River, during the past ten years, amounts to 62 per cent. of the whole tonnage of all descriptions of property arriving at Tide Water by the Erie Canal during the same time.
The increase of the Stare traffic on the Erie Canal has been quite uniform for the past ten years. The increase for the past five years, over the previous five years, amounts to 30 per cent. in the aggregate. In comparison with the trade of our own Canals, the traffic on the Wel- land Canal shows a decrease of 15 per cent. for the past four years, from that of the prece- ding four years. This may be accounted for by the fact, that since the opening of the Great Western and Grand Trunk Railways of Canada,

The movement of Staves through the Wel- land Canal, bound for American porta, shows a decrease of only one per cent. during the past four years, as against the aggregate of the previous four years; therefore the decrease on the Welland Canal, is in Staves bound to Cana- dian ports.
The comparison of the traffic on the Erie Ca- nal, with that on the Welland Canal, for the ten years ending 1858, shows a little more than double the number of tons moved on the former, as compared with the latter.
Assuming the amount of Staves reaching the Tide Waters of the Atlantic Ocean annually, to be in round numbers 300,000 Tons, it will be seen that the proportion moved on the Erie Canal is about 33 per cent .; by the St. Lawrence River, about 20 per cent .; by New Orleans, about 13 per cent .; by Norfolk, about 13 per cent .; and by various other routes, say 21 per cent. of the whole quantity.
The average amount of Staves exported from various ports to foreign countries, is as follows :

NOTE .- The Staves exported from Canada to the U. S. are not embraced in the above Statement. It must be borne in mind that . be Staves exported from Canada, will average moch heavier than those from the U. S., as a large amount of the u consist of Standard, or Butt Suaves, as appear hy the foregoing Tables.
With the above data, it appears that of the 300,000 Tons of Staves annually arriving at Tide Water, in the U. S. and Canada, nearly two-thirds are annually exported to foreign countries, or s y 186,000 Tons.
The proportionate export from several of the Ports is as follows :

The periods of comparison of New York, Que- bec, and Montreal, are for the five years end- ing Dec. 31st, 1859, against the five years end- ing Dec. 31st, 1854.
That of New Orleans is for the three years ending August 31st, 1859, against the three years ending August 31st, 1856. No Annual Statement of Exports, previous to the one for the year ending August 31st, 1859, has ever been heretofore published for the port of New Orleans.
From the above comparison, it will be seen that the export trade of New Orleans is increas- · ing in a very rapid ratio. The Stave trade of Europe is tending in that direction, as Staves can be delivered at New Orleans, at less prices than at New York; inasmuch as they are float- ed down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers and their tributary streams, paying neither tolls or towage.
The export trade of Quebec and Mentreal, it will be noticed, is increasing much faster than the export trade of New York ; while from ports on Lake Erie, the export has more than doubled the past year, direct to Europe, via the St. Law- rence River.
The question is, (and it is a matter of strong
competition with the trade,) which shall be the leading Port of export for Staves, New York, New Orleans, or Quebec. Both New Orleans and Quebec are outstripping New York, even at the extremely low prices which have ruled at the latter place during the past few years- Each of the three Ports will retain its own do- mestic trade, as a matter of course. The strife is for the traffic and transportation of the Staves bound to foreign countries. If New York is to retain the supremacy which she has hereto- fore had, or if she is even to retain her present commerce in Staves, it can only be done by cheap freights, and low tolls on the Erie Canal.

These figures would seem to indicate that not even one-half the usual amount was manu- factured at western points last year. There was doubtless a very large falling off in this di- rection, but whether, as compared with 1858 it amounted to 50 per cent. even, is a matter of some doubt. The short eorn crop of 1858 goes to warrant this conclusion ; but, on the other hand, we understand the Railroads carried more than their usual average amount to the sea- board last year, although the receipts by the Buffalo and Erie road at this point goes to dis- prove this asserton, and beside, it is generally admitted that a larger quantity than usual was manufactured trom grain other than corn.

The propeller Equinox was the first vessel which cleared from this port last season. She went out on the 2d of March, having on board some 400 bbls potatoes, and about 40 stoves .-- Her destination was Sandusky, where she ar- rived on the morning of the 4th. She returned , to this port on the 8th of the same month, with & cargo of flour, corn and pork. We conse- quently date the opening of navigation from that period, although the first arrival from the upper lakes was the propeller Forest Queen, from Milwaukee, with a cargo composed mostly of flour and bacon, which came in on the 9th of April, a month later. Aside from the ferry boat International, the first craft from Canada was the schooner Bell, which arrived on the 13th of March. The propeller Missouri, from De- troit, arrived on the 18th of the same month .- From the date of the first arrival from upper
