The Company was organized under the General Gas Light Law of 1848, and the works were completed and gas supplied to the city in November of the same year.


The works are situated on the Block bound- ed by Genesee, Jackson and Fourth Streets and the Wilkeson Slip, and comprising about five acres in all occupied by the company.


The whole construction is of the most sub- stantial character, embracing all modern im- provementa, and with the extensions and ad- ditional machinery to be added the present season, will make it one of the most complete works in the United States.


The quantity of street mains now laid and in use, is about fifty-seven milen, with gasom- eter room and retort house facilities for the manufacture and supply of a daily consump- tion of 500,000 cubic feet.
