The following is an exhibit of the lake re- ceipts last season. We have endeavored to give the valuation of the articles, or rather an approx- imation thereof, as it would be impossible, from the nature of the case, to state their pre- cise intrinsic worth. We feel confident, how- ever, that our estimate 18 not too high, espe- cially on the leading items :

The value of the receipts, according to the above statement, shows a falling off of $9,386,- 954. This result is attributed to a decided de- crease in the receipts of live stock, flour, wheat, corn, oats, copper ore, butter, &c., coupled with a material decrease in the VALUATION of leading articles. As an instance, wheat was estimated at $1 00 per bu in 1858, the receipts being 10,- 671,550 bu, while in 1859 we received 9,434,652 bu, which we have estimated at 80c por bu.
We present below a monthly statement, sbow- ing the source of supply of what we conceive to be twelve of the most important articles re- ceived at this port. The figures opposite "In- diana" indicate the amount which came from Toledo :
STATEKRAT , bowing the monthly receipts of lumber, staver' live stock and wool from diferent States and Canada at Buffalo by lake during the reason of lake navigation in 1959.

Ohio is thus shown to have contributed more flour than any other State. Wisconsin and Il- linois are credited with more wheat than all the other States combined. Illinois, again, sende us more corn, oats, barley and rye than all the other States. Of lumber, Canada contributed the largest amount, although Michigan may be said to fairly equal her, the difference being scarcely worthy of mention. The resources of both are of the most unbounded character, but latterly capitalists seem to have turned their at- tention more directly to Michigan. Canada, OD the contrary, has brought forward an increased number of staves, which in a measure balances the deficiency in lumber. Indiana ranks first in her shipments of hogs and cattle, wbile Obio is first in the items of sheep and wool. For for- ther particulars relative to the total receipts of live stock, as well by lake as rail, we refer the reader to our article under the head of "Live Stock," where may be found the total receipts by all routes, together with a statement of the source of supply.

There is thus shown to have been a large fall. ng off in a few of the staple leading articles, and why ? Simply because there was a very large decrease in the amount to come forward. It is, therefore, a mistake to suppose that the bulk of these articles have found their way to the seaboard by any other route than via the lakes and Erie Canal. Especially are these re- marks applicable to the grain trade. We are aware that mavy individuals who, by the way,
are unacquainted with the intrmusic merits of this subject, are constantly alluding to the fact that Buffalo, during the season of 1859 did not reach her importatious of the previous year by an aggregate of nearly 7,000,000 bu of grain .- By an illogical method they thus arrive at the conclusion that this port, as a receiving point, is rapidly growing into disfavor. The facts in the case are entirely the reverse. There is not a port on the whole chain of lakes, be it either a receiving or export point, but that has shown a large falling off iu grain receipts as compared with 1858, and the reason, as before remarked, is because there was no more to come forward. By reference to a tabular statement, under the head of "Grain Exports from the Lake Re- gions," which appears in another part of this statement, the reader cannot fail to observe that Buffalo shows an increased per centage in her receipts of grain, as compared with any pre- vious season in her history.
On the contrary, a handsome gain is apparent in lumber, staves, lath, lard, seed, bacon, and many other articles. Taken as a whole, there- fore, the lake business last year was all, and even more, than the most sanguine could have reasonably anticipated.

COMMERCIAL ADVERTISER DIRECTORY.
Here we have an array of figures indicative of our receipts of flour and grain for twenty-three successive years, which of late years will favora- bly compare with those of any seaport town in the world. Notwithstanding this fact, it was no uncommon sight, at one time last season, to Ree two and three vessels all on the bar at one time at the entrance of our harbor. We are in- formed that measures are under way to remove this difficulty. Were the navigable waters of these inland seas in the best possible condition, in order to the prosecution of a successful car- rying business, life and property would even then be less secure than if the same vessels en- gaged in it were doing business between the ports of New York and Liverpool. This fact is admitted almost universally. For want of suf- ficient appropriations in years past, many par- tially finished harbors are rapidly approaching a condition when vessels drawing any consid- erable depth of water will find it next to impos- sible to enter them with any degree of safety. The St. Clair Flats also presents a formidable barrier to vessels passing to and from the up- per lakes. At a late session of Congress a bill was passed appropriating $55,000 to deepen the channel over these flats, but after passing both Houses of our National Legislature by large majorities, and presented to the Executive" for his approval, he kept it in his possession nearly eleven months, and only recently return- ed it to the Senate with his veto. To say the least, this small appropriation was strictly ne- cessary, affecting as it does the entire commer- cial interests of the West, and it is a matter of extreme regret that any mere fancied techni- cality should have interfered to hinder its be- coming a law.
The receipts of grain during the past season were handled by the following Elevators :

Probably no point on the lakes is so well pro- vided with elevators as Buffalo. The Corn Dock and Hatch are the only two, we believe, which are able to unload two vessels at the same time, although most of them possess the means of loading two boats at once.
The City Elevator, owned by the New York
Central Railroad Company, and adjoining the freight depot of that corporation, on Ohio st, was totally destroyed by fire on the night of the 8th of October last. It had a capacity of 370,000 bushels, and was capable of elerating 2,500 bushels per hour. The origin of the fire ir still a mystery, although it is believed that some one of the journals became beated, and communicated the fire to the wood work. The amount of the different kinds of grain consum- ed at this fire was as follows :
Wheat bu 157 000
Corn, ba 25.000
Data, bu.
Ba lev, bu 17.00
Rye, ba.
Total.
There was other produce besides grain stored in the Elevator, but a large portion of it vu removed without damage. The grain was cov- ered by $172 600 insurance.
The Central Railroad Company bare recent. ly commenced the foundation for a new eleva. tor building, which is to occupy the site of the one recently burned. It is to be built of brick and wood, and will front 134 feet on Ohio st, 136 feet on Michigan street, 144 feet on the dock, and 187 feet on the freight depot. The building is to rest on 128 stone piers eight feet high, each of which will be supported by nine well driven piles. The intermediate space be- tween the piers is to occupied by mason work, surmounted by inverted arches running at right angles from the piers, and connected with them in such a manner as to prevent the building from nettling. The first story is to be fourteco feet high. The bins are to be ten feet square at the top, and forty feet in depth ; made in the form of a hopper at the bottom to avoid "trim. ming" when nearly empty. The walls of these bins are to be six inches in thickness. The out- side of the building will be entirely fire proof, as the roof is to be covered with sheet iron, while the windows and doors are to be provi- ded with shutters of the same material. The whole building is to be lighted from above, and when completed will have a capacity for storing 500,000 buxbels of grain.
According to the report of the Elevating Company. the amount of grain in store on the 8th of December last was as follows :
