2,203 in the number of vessels entering and clearing from the port; an increase of 31,358 in crews, and an increase of 2,263,300 in the ton- nage account. These figures are from the offi- cial register at the Custom House, and are as accurate and reliable as they are gratifying in their character.


SHIPPING OF THE PORT.


The entire lake marine has suffered severely from disasters of one description or other dur- ing the year 1859. The increase in losses, as shown by the statement recently made by the Board of Lake Underwriters, amounts to #287,868, being more than half the total losses of 1858. The marine of this district has borne its full share of these disasters, and we occordingly find a decrease of 4,474 tons in the tonnage account of the port. The following is a list of the vessels owned in this district, as given to us by the Deputy Collector of the port. It is believed to be as correct a list as any which have preceded it for several years :

Taking the valuation made by the Board of Lake Underwriters of the total lake marine as a basis for our calculation, the valuation of ves- sels owned in Buffalo, is $1,977,215, or about one-sixth of the whole marine on our lakes.

The damage done to vessels ou our lakes, as before remarked, was unusualy large last sea- WOD. The months in which the greater portion of the damage occurred were April, September October and November. Many violent squalls were encountered during these months, as well as protracted gales of from one to three days in duration. We append a list of those vessels be- longing to this district which met with accident; the amount of damage sustained by each, to- gether with a statement of the loss of life.
